This very easy to understand book helps the families and friends of alcoholics come to grips with the fact that alcoholism is a disease and not a character defect. It is a 12 step program and has true stories told by Al-Anon members after each of the steps and traditions addressed. Members use this book in meetings where "principles are put above personalities" and anonymity makes "it a safe place to be". I was excited to receive this useful book that describes how the families and friends of alcoholics can have a program of recovery for themselves. Excellent handbook that can be used over and over.

I am the soul non-alcoholic/addict in a group home for recovering homeless veterans, and I joined Al-Anon to get better acquainted with what my fellow housemates are going through. This book has been instrumental in that understanding PLUS it's a good book to follow for just ordinary life's trials and tribulations. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to improved their outlook in life and how to live it.

This "book" is nothing more than a collection of magazine articles and promotional material. The paper and typesetting are of low quality. There is nothing of any practical use in this. Lacks scientific credibility. Very disappointing. I want my money back.

Grade 7-12?Talented British actress Brigit Forsyth becomes young Mall Percival to recount Jill Paton Walsh's touching story (FS&G, 1992 pap.) of life in medieval England following the Restoration and religious turmoil and through the death and devastation caused by the Bubonic plague. Her good diction and clear enunciation make it easy for listeners to follow the regional accents and varied levels of education of the speakers in the town. Her speech is steady and appropriately paced. There is no hesitation with the unusual sentence structure of the time period. The emotions of the characters are effectively portrayed; grief, fear, love, anger are naturally reflected in her voice and never seem artificial or contrived. The producer has made it easy for one to read along with the narration as the corresponding page numbers are printed on each side of the tapes. This excellent presentation will make it possible for a young lady of 1665 to visit with the youth of 1996.

Touching and realistically-told true story of Eyam's near devastation by The Plague

I love stories that illustrate as well as this one does the depths, complexities, glory, strength, and even frailty of humanity. When the Plague hit the village of Eyam in 1665 the residents made the ultimate sacrifice of quarantining themselves in order to protect outlying towns and villages from sharing their fate. Once the story began to unfold, I couldn't put the book down. Though the crisis certainly created panic and gave opportunity for human weakness to play out (ie. selfishness, blame, etc...), more than anything people truly rose to the occasion and demonstrated incredible strength of character and honor. Never have I read an account of The Plague told in such a personal manner--it gave me a much better understanding of what it was really like as well as a sense of awe towards those who survived it after living through such terror and loss. I am left with a sense of "being there".

Though told through the perspective of a fictitious character, the events and main characters in the book are taken from the real history of the village of Eyam in Derbyshire. If you search online you will see photos of places, buildings, and other landmarks in the town. After reading this book, you will want to dig deeper.

I'm no longer a kid but wish I had read this in my teens

I am intrigued by books about the plague. The attraction? Well, even one of my crappiest, exhaustion-filled day pales in comparison to living through the plague. Or maybe it's those gore filled plague sores that call to me (but I'd never truly admit that).

This book is a bit different than the few that I've read about the plague of the 1600's in that it isn't scholarly, dry or written from the point of view of adults. This fictional tale is told by a young lady named Mal who describes her world with beauty and sensitivity. Initially, the writing style was a bit of a chore and a little difficult to get into. But stick with it, the journey is well worth the work. Once I adjusted myself to the rhythm of the writer and the different language choices (than I'm used to) I fell completely into Mall's world of hard work and young love amidst the threat of unbelievable horror when the Bubonic Plague arrives.

I'm a hard-hearted reader, having read far more than my share of overly sentimental stuff, but this book brought me to tears too many times to count from the sheer strength of this young girl. It makes me all teary just to think about these people. This is a book that should be required reading in schools (if it isn't already).

Great book for shy professionals

Other reviewers called this book a how-to on being insincere and manipulative. I think they completely missed the point. This book is pure and simple a guide for professionals who are shy or need improvement in their social skills.

Not knowing how to make diplomatic small talk in this world is like showing up to work everyday wearing a HITLER WAS FRAMED t-shirt. The people who have natural social skills don't appreciate the fact that good social skills are taught. They're taught by parents, they're taught by friends, and some people just have to teach themselves. This book is pretty damn good for those people.

I use to be so incredibly shy that I didn't even want to leave my house. At one point my father died and I realized my own mortality and decided to go out and become a better person and to get over my shyness. I bought a few books on confidence building and books on how to hold conversations with people. I had very bad friends who put me down and who were completely selfish. I just had bad company.

This book helped me so much in understanding how to hold a conversation with people. Leil Lowndes is a great writer and she really udnerstands what it takes to become more confident in your conversation and in yourself as a person.

Could you use this to be phony and superficial? Yup, but that's up to your personality and what you wish to take from this book. I decided to use this to be able to understand how to hold conversations with people and know how to create relationships. I used this one technique called the flooding smile and that as well as a few other techniques from this book and I'm now dating this beautiful girl and have a few new friends who are positive and make me feel good about myself. I bought this and the other books by Leil Lowndes. I'd definitely consider this book as one of my Meccas as well as a few other books.

How to socialize more smoothly

The 92 tricks in this book are techniques for making yourself more pleasant to talk to. People need the lubrication of small talk and etiquette for dealing with each other. Much of our interaction with each other is fairly shallow, but this shallow interaction is helpful for getting to the deeper interaction. Indeed, this book gives techniques for fairly shallow interaction between people, but knowing how to be good at shallow interaction gives you a larger number of people than you would have otherwise who are comfortable with you, with whom you can then have deeper interactions. "You see, small talk is not about facts or words. It's about music, about melody. Small talk is about putting people at ease. It's about making comforting noises together like cats purring, children humming, or groups chanting. You must first match your listener's mood." (p. 48) What I took away from this book is a greater respect for social graces.

The five top tricks that I want to remember are: look at someone for a moment before breaking into a smile (to make them feel that the smile is a response to them in particular, rather than something that's always pasted on your face); hang by your teeth posture (it seems like a good way to remember what good posture is supposed to look like); match the energy level of your conversation partner; when asked where you're from or what you do, give some story to make it interesting rather than merely giving a naked city or job; regularly scramble your life (do something you'd never dream of doing, to get a broad base of experiences that will give you something in common with a larger number of people).
