Not the best handbook in the field

At the University of Padua (Italy, Venice area) my training on the mechanics of vibrations was founded about Rao handbook.
A real great book (I believe that buy its fifth edition).
Unfortunately this work of Prof. Rao, on reliability engineering, is not, in my opinion, to the same level.
And I say this with sorrow.
In particular, Chapter 15, on the maintainability and availability, I think it can be improved.
There are, on the editorial market, better options.

Excellent for adults and children

We discovered this helpful and easy to use little booklet when our young daughter's Chinese tutor brought it as a study aid.
It is much more structured and easy to follow than traditional dry textbooks on this subject. It is also much more
colorful and full of illustrations, songs etc. With the included CD it makes a package that is a total winner. With any
standard CD player it is very easy to pause and playback sections in order to review. The CD voices are lively and very
clear. The only possible drawback is that traditional characters are used. But for those who want to learn traditional
and simplified, and for those who are mainly concerned with speaking and listening comprehension, this is one of the most
useful study materials around. And, by the way, a romanized written language is included, as you read along, for those who want
to skip the characters entirely.

Good so far

I am an English speaking adult trying to learn Chinese, so I bought this book. So far, it has been pretty good. The lessons move very quickly on the CD, so you will need to have a native speaker to help you with the actual language. It's a good accompaniment to learning with a Chinese teacher. I would recommend it.

I actually purchased this book for myself, as an adult traveling to Shanghai on business. I found this to be perfect for me to start at the ground level with some Mandarin. Common vocabulary, relationships, everyday objects and common phrases are included. I found this book perfect for my needs, and age appropriate when my sons started eavesdropping on daddy.

This book includes Chinese calligraphy and pinyin (alpha-phonetic) text. I highly recommend finding a good online pinyin translator (mine is mdbg.com), that includes audio pronunciations. Using a web page with audio compliments this book well; I preferred using the web page over the CD.

I simply fell in love with this book

I simply fell in love with this book, after being introduced to this author on Instagram. The words that this author brings to paper, are the ones that normal people (like me and you) are unable to put into words even though we may be feeling and thinking about them. Reading this book made me feel like I had come home; that I had been given the privilege to meet with a like-minded mind, who really GETS you.

Little Billy doesn't believe his mother, and the Devil whispers to Little Billy that the monsters don't exist, and there is a plethora of luscious wild strawberries in the forest. Soon, Little Billy is walking through the forest when he hears something coming after him, and runs to escape it. As he looks back, he sees puffs of orange-red smoke catching up with him. He escapes what he is sure must be the Spittler by climbing up a tree as high and as fast as he can. When he comes to a rest, he notices windows opening all over the branches, and discovers a whole city of little people, the Minpins, living inside the tree. The leader of the Minpins, Don Mini, tells Little Billy that the monster waiting under the tree is not the Spittler (which the Minpins have never heard of), but the Red-Hot Smoke-Belching Gruncher, who grunches up everything in the forest. It seems that there is no way for Little Billy to safely get down from the tree and return home. But upon learning of the close friendship between the Minpins and birds, Little Billy devises a plan to rid the forest of the Gruncher: Little Billy flies on the back of a swan and uses his scent to lure the Gruncher into a lake. The water of the lake puts out the fire in the Gruncher's belly, killing him. The Minpins are grateful to Little Billy for ridding the forest of their tormentor. They reward him by sending the swan to serve as Little Billy's own personal transport every night, which he uses to explore the world and to continue his new-found friendship with the Minpins.

Although a well-written and superbly illustrated book parents need to know that it is the devil (yes that is the word used) that tempts Little Billy to disobey his mother telling him not to be believe her, that there is nothing scary in the forest and the floor is covered with wild strawberries. Little Billy is never punished for his disobedience except in the fact that he truly does get the biggest scare of his life. This may not be a good book for young, sensitive children. It is quite graphic and the Gruncher could be frightening to some even though the story does have a happy ending. Our two boys thought it was wonderful and I had to read it all in one setting!

The Adventures of Tintin (Les Aventures de Tintin) is a series of comic strips created by Belgian artist Herge the pen name of Georges Remi (1907 1983). Herge himself features in several of the comics as a background character; as do his assistants in some instances.
The success of the series saw the serialized strips collected into a series of albums (24 in all), spun into a successful magazine and adapted for film and theatre. The series is one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century, with translations published in over 50 languages and more than 200 million copies of the books sold to date.
The comic strip series has long been admired for its clean, expressive drawings in Herge's signature ligne claire style. Engaging, well-researched plots straddle a variety of genres: swashbuckling adventures with elements of fantasy, mysteries, political thrillers, and science fiction. The stories within the Tintin series always feature slapstick humor, accompanied in later albums by sophisticated satire, and political and cultural commentary.

When Humanitarianism Goes Bad

In Blackhawk Down, Mark Bowden tells a rather military centric story of when Special Forces went into Somalia to round up some Somalia warlords and instead events ended up having a chilling effect of American intervention, I would argue up until September 11th. In reading Blackhawk Down, one gets the ultimate soldiers’ perspective as the story jumps around from place to place to give almost a panoramic view of the fight to live to see tomorrow.

There were parts of the book where I slipped into a malaise of sorts because how many pages of we shoot, they die or they shoot and we die can a person take before they slip into this unintended emotionless state of being? And yes, before anyone asks, I was aware that this wasn’t going to be basket of puppy hour. I don’t know if what I experienced was a defect in the way Bowden told the story itself or if I just never got hooked into this one.

Blackhawk Down didn’t work for me.

STRUCTURALLY UNSOUND, BUT ENJOYABLE OVERALL

Bowden's book is written in the kind of language you would expect from a traditional journalist. He is clear, concise, and does not bog his language down in artistic flourish. In fact, in his Afterward he claims to be proud of this straightforwardness with the reader; this despite it garnering him a slight barb from one particular reviewer he mentions.

However, it must be said that the structure of the book is a little messy. The number of individuals whose points of view Bowden includes can be daunting to sift through. I did not even bother to count the POVs he puts down on paper, but the reader should be aware there is no centralized perspective to go back to for reference. The author does not inject himself into the story (e.g. "And then I interviewed this person who said..."), and ordinarily that is fine. But, with a book showcasing the perspectives of so many people -- from lowly soldiers, to the their families, to commanders, to politicians -- it is difficult to sort through who is who and why any particular person is relevant. What makes it worse is that Bowden doesn't really offer any breaks for a reader to register a transition from one person's POV to another. Unfortunately, this problem hampers the flow of the story as the reader, at times, may be forced to backtrack just to refresh his or her memory on who is who. To be fair, Bowden interviewed countless individuals and wanted to give a good many of them their due. I have no doubt he left out many of POVs despite deep reservation. Still, none of this matters if the reader is not discouraged by such things. I was still able to jog through the book at a brisk and enjoyable pace in spite of this road block.

Another important note: this book corresponds poorly with the eponymous movie. The reader will find many of the characters in the movie are composites of actual people Bowden describes in the book. Not to mention the movie glosses over some of the uglier aspects of war (e.g. in the book, Bowden writes the U.S. Rangers eventually start shooting anything and everything in their path, including a large number of unarmed civilians). So, if you are ready for a dose of reality, read the book and drop your jaw.

Wow this is an event that makes you think

This book is an eye opener. I saw the movie many years ago and didn't really comprehend the magnitude of what happened in that battle...maybe I was too young when the movie was released. The battle described by the author from the point of view of the Rangers and Delta Force is written in a way I've never experienced before in a book. Fast moving action, with the personal experiences of various soldiers. It is unbelievable that so much carnage could happen in such a relatively short time, even though this battle definitely felt like an eternity to the guys who were fighting the good fight. Once again a sad story about the cost of good vs. evil, and the amazing people who are willing to give up everything to fight that fight. I would recommend this book to anyone who appreciates this type of book, it is truly gripping and it has had such an effect on me that I am constantly shopping for more of the same :)

An important compendium of some of the newer areas of the field of transgender studies. The Transgender Studies Readers are an important academic contribution since they make a range of important and often hard to get texts available to scholars, students, and all who rely on the information contained in this compact reader in their work and lives. This second Reader is an important follow up and focuses on the latest developments in the continually expanding and diversifying field of transgender studies which is increasingly interacting not only with feminism, but also critical whiteness, post colonialism, crip studies, animal studies, and many more.
