It's an old book and it is outdated, BUT it is tailored for landscape architects. It's inexpensive and it has some good case studies so you really can't complain.

nice examples of real projects
By A Customer
While somewhat biased towards ESRI software, this book still managed to capture the essence of what real LAs are doing with GIS. What it lacks in technical detail, it more than makes up for with its very nice graphics and maps.

Winning with the Trompowsky (Batsford Chess Book), by Peter Wells

The accelarated development of the White queen's bishop after 1 d4 Nf6 2 Bg5 was for many years considered a bizarre chess opening, practiced only by a few "eccentric" chess players scattered around the globe, including the Brazilian Octavio Trompowsky, after whom the variation was named. Then in the 1990s, after a chance discovery, the young English grandmaster, Julian Hodgson, started to play it on the UK and international chess circuit with dramatic success, scoring many short wins with dashing attacking play. By force of example, the opening then saw a rapid increase in popularity; in fact, it is now regarded as "mainline" theory. Players interested in mastering this move will find here a thorough survey of the development and latest trends in this exciting opening, together with illustrative games. A must for any Competitive player.

This is how opening books should be written
By igetair
Aside from being a strong opening in itself, the Trompowsky lets White avoid Black's pet Indian defenses and can be frustrating. In this book, Wells covers all of the main lines of the Trompowsky with just enough detail. Against the two critical lines, 1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5 Ne4 3. Bf4 c5!? and 3. ..d5 there, he offers a "Solid" move and an "Attacking" move, with one chapter devoted to each. Here are the chapters of the book, for the curious:
[1. d4 Nf6 2. Bg5]
1) 2. ...Ne4 Introduction and Minor Lines
2) 2. ...Ne4 3. Bf4 c5 4. f3 Qa5+ 5. c3 Nf6 6. d5 (Attacking)
3) 2. ...Ne4 3. Bf4 c5 4. f3 Qa5+ 5. c3 Nf6 6. Nd2 (Solid)
4) 2. ...Ne4 3. Bf4 d5 - Introduction and Attacking Repertoire with 4. f3
5) 2. ...Ne4 3. Bf4 d5 4. e3!? (Solid)
6) 2. ...c5 - Introduction and the Solid Repertoire with 3. Bxf6
7) 2. ...c5 - The Attacking Repertoire with 3. d5!?
8) 2. ...e6 3. e4!?
9) 2. ...d5 - Introduction and 3. Bxf6
10) 2. ...g6 and other Minor 2nd Moves
11) Index of Main Variations
12) Index of Games
The book follows master-level Trompowsky games and Wells annotates them in a very instructive fashion. I learned to play the Trompowsky with confidence after just one reading of this book.
There is one pseudo-Trompowsky line that this book does NOT cover: 1. d4 d5 2. Bg5!? If you really want to play this line, you'll have to look elsewhere to learn it.

Best? opening book
By 2many2read
This is the bible of the opening made popular by Julian Hodgson and other young British GMs. In his hands, it fits with his slashing, attacking style.
The book's 240 pages are chockful of original analysis and reveal the author's passion for this opening. There's a lot of clear explanations for lower-rated players as well as enough innovative lines that even GMs will need this book to tackle the Tromp. In fact, Jeremy Silman has called this work "magnificent" and described it as simply the best opening text he's ever seen.
A question for me remains why the opening is so under-represented in MCO 14. It's covered in about three pages.
By the way, look at Wells' other opening books too: The Complete Semi-Slave and The Complete Richter-Rauzer. According to Mr. Silman, they set the standard for those openings as well.

Good Book, Bad Opening
By daorange
This is an excellent book, but it ignores the fact that the trompowsky isn't fun for white after 2...d5 or the various other lines in which white plays bishop takes knight and black takes back with the g pawn. The dark squares and bishop pair will usually give black a position in which he is anything but worse. Then there's also the problem with what to play against moves like 1...d5, 1...f5, 1...e6, and 1...c6. In the latter two you could transpose to e4 openings, but then why are you playing d4? And in the first two, what do you play? Either the main lines, which you're trying to avoid by playing the trompowsky, or some system like the London or Stonewall in which your opponent can just copy your moves and draw. I don't even recommend this opening as a secondary weapon, because you must have knowledge of benoni, open sicilian, and french advance structures to play the Tromp, and that's a lot of work for a surprise opening that isn't even that good.

Covers all the necessary topics for the Private Pilot Knowledge Test.
Does so in a readable and clear manner.
Very good value for money compared with the "glossy" training book...and also a great deal lighter to carry around!

Unbelievable!
By mtlartist
I just started reading both The Complete Private Pilot (TCPP) and The Pilot's Manual:Ground School (TPMGS) in preparation to attend flight school. Please note that I have just begun reading corresponding topics in both books. Weights and balances. Both books use an example of an aircraft with differing wing weight loads but making the same 60 degree bank turn. TCPP'S weight example(page 8-2) is 2500 lbs.. TCPP states that under a load factor 2G the gain is only 1000 lbs while TPMGS's example(page 235) is an aircraft weighing 3000 lbs has an additional gain of 3000 lbs under the same load factor, double it's wing level load.
Do you see the difference? TPMGS claims it doubles under a 2G turn load factor while TCPP suggests only a 40% gain.

Who do I believe? Which book do I rely on for accurate information? Remember, I just started reading these books today. I truly hope this is the only discrepancy I find.

vital books
By Derrick Jensen
Lewis Mumford was one of the 20th century's most important philosophers, and the two-volume set Myth of the Machine (Volume 1 is Technics and Human Development; and Volume 2 is The Pentagon of Power) are probably his most important books: the summation of his life's work. In writing as elegant as it is clear, Mumford makes plain the death urge that has always underlain civilization, which Mumford calls "the machine," and later "the megamachine." This is a social structure organized not around any organic human needs, but around the "needs" of the machines that have come to characterize and control our lives. These are crucial, incisive, devastating books. I cannot praise them highly enough.

Reading this several decades after it was written (on the recommendation of a friend) provides some rear view mirror insight into utopian visions (or dystopian predictions) that did not pan out as expected.

Its worth reading, if only to be reminded of the above.

Rage Against the Mega-Machine
By Sean, seanbrasil@lycos.com
Nobody writes like this anymore. I hadn't expected the eminent urban historian to write such a brilliant paranoiac tract against the System and Established Order. Although often redundant, Mumford makes a heroic attempt at explaining the current problems of our times, with roots in the Middle Ages, and perhaps even the Age of the Pyramids. He echoes contempories like Herbert Marcuse, Erich Fromm and Marshall McLuhan, but instead of taking a Marxist, psychological or media perspective, he takes the more general view of an urbanist. The arguments are quite paralell, although considerably more holistic at times. One recognizes critiques that were earlier or later articulated by not only Marxists, but also feminists, environmentalists, and anti-Imperialists. There are also anticipations of the New Age Movement! (See Fitjof Capra's "the Turning Point.")In short, this massive volume impressively combines much historical and cultural material in its critique of Modern Western Civilization. Although the tone of the book is quite bleak -- we would all appear to be trapped in this Megamachine, the High Technology of the Power Elites -- one also senses a hope towards last chapters that an alternative is possible. He seems to suggest a New Age style withdrawal, rather than any kind of organized resistance. Draw your own conclusions.

Biology: How Life Works, by James Morris, Daniel Hartl, Andrew Knoll, Robert Lue

Rethinking biology means rethinking the text, the visual program, and assessment.

Ordinarily, textbooks are developed by first writing chapters, then making decisions about art and images, and finally, once the book is complete, assembling a test bank and ancillary media. This process dramatically limits the integration across resources, and reduces art, media, and assessments to ancillary material, rather than essential resources for student learning.   Biology: How Life Works is the first project to develop three pillars—the text, the visual program, and the assessment—at the same time. All three pillars were developed in parallel to make sure that each idea is addressed in the most appropriate medium, and to ensure authentic integration. These three pillars are all tied to the same set of core concepts, share a common language, and use the same visual palette. In this way, the text, visual program, and assessments are integral parts of student learning, rather than just accessories to the text.
RETHINKING THE TEXT
Integrated
Biology: How Life Works moves away from a focus on disparate topics, towards an integrated approach. Chemistry is presented in context, structure and function are covered together, the flow of information in a cell is introduced where it makes the most conceptual sense, and cases serve as a framework for connecting and assimilating information. Selective
Biology: How Life Works was envisioned not as a reference book for all of biology, but a resource focused on foundational concepts, terms, and experiments. This allows students to more easily identify, understand, and apply critical concepts, and develop a framework on which to build their understanding of biology. Thematic
Biology: How Life Works was written with six themes in mind. Introduced in Chapter 1 and revisited throughout, these themes provide a framework that helps students see biology as a set of connected concepts. In particular, the theme of evolution is emphasized for its ability to explain and predict so many patterns in biology. RETHINKING THE VISUAL PROGRAM
Integrated
Across Biology: How Life Works—whether students are looking at a figure in the book, watching an animation, or interacting with a simulation—they always see a consistent use of color, shapes, and design. Engaging
Every image—still and in motion—engages students by being vibrant, clear, and approachable. The result is a visual environment that is expertly designed to pull students in, deepens their interest, and helps them see a world of biological processes. A Visual Framework
To help students think like biologists, the visual program is designed to be a framework for students to hang the concepts and connect ideas. Individual figures present foundational concepts; Visual Synthesis figures tie multiple concepts across chapters together; animations bring these figures to life; and simulations let students interact with the concepts. Collectively, this visual framework allows students to move seamlessly back and forth between the big picture and the details. RETHINKING THE ASSESSMENT
Range
Developed by a broad community of leading science educators, the assessments for Biology: How Life Works address all types of learning, from recall to synthesis. They are designed to be used in a variety of settings and come in a wide range of formats (multiple choice, true/false, free response). Integrated
Assessment is seamlessly integrated into the text and the visual program (both in print and interactive). Each time an instructor asks a student to engage with Biology: How Life Works—whether it is reading a chapter, watching an animation, or working through an experiment—the opportunity to assess that experience exists. Connected
Many of the questions and activities for Biology: How Life Works are organized in sets called Progressions.  Questions in a Progression are aligned with one or more core concepts, and are designed to move a student from basic knowledge to higher order skills and deeper understanding.  Progressions questions can be used individually or in a series as pre-class quizzes, in-class clicker questions or activities, post-class homework, or exams.  When used in sequence, Progressions provide a connected learning path for students.

Intangible Capital: Putting Knowledge to Work in the 21st-Century Organization, by Mary Adams, Michael Oleksak

Description:
Intangible Capital: Putting Knowledge to Work in the 21st-Century Organization is for every manager struggling to succeed and innovate in today's knowledge-based economy. This must-have handbook helps businesspeople build smarter, more successful companies by maximizing the knowledge that is already inside their organizations.

Most businesspeople have heard of the growing importance of knowledge workers, information technology, innovation, networks, reputation, and performance management. Like no other guidebook, Intangible Capital shows how each of these trends fit into an overall discipline of intangibles management. The book takes the ten basic building blocks of traditional, industrial-era businesses and defines their knowledge-era equivalents--intangibles as the new raw material, intellectual capital (IC) as the new production line, IC assessment as the new balance sheet, and networks as the new organizational chart.

This approach provides a clear road map for managers adapting to the realities of business today, one that helps translate the new world of the knowledge-based economy into understandable terms and ready-to-implement ideas.

Title Features:

  • Includes an exercise at the end of each chapter that enables readers to connect the chapter to their own businesses
  • Presents a resource section in each chapter for additional print and online sources
  • An accompanying website at intangiblecapitalbook.com with sections for all key corporate titles (CEO, CFO, CIO, COO, etc.) shows how the book relates to their work and serves as a forum for ideas among readers

Review
"…brilliant new book…This is a must read." - thinkipstrategy.com

"It's much more fun to read than the rather solemn title suggests, combining strands of history, economics, management, metaphor and common sense, personal experience and anecdote. It's also a monument to the metamorphosis of management and asset management philosophies from the age of bricks and mortar to the world of the internet. …Since the right answers are (i) business-specific and (ii) change in time, while the right questions can be applied more generally and are less subject to the vicissitudes of commercial fashion, this is altogether a greater benefit to the reader." - ipfinance.blogspot.com

"If you want to know what issues businesses will be grappling with in the next few years, read Intangible Capital and think about the possible impacts as, not if, the ideas presented in this book come to pass." - innovateonpurpose.blogspot.com

"The book provides tips that will help managers adapt to the knowledge-based economy and measure the true effect of intangibles on the bottom line." - IP Spotlight

Review
"Intangible Capital is a breakthrough book. Adams and Oleksak have managed the near impossible: to make the complex topic of intangible assets understandable and meaningful to businessmen, policymakers and the general public. I consider this a guidebook to the economy of the 21st Century." (Kenan Jarboe
President, Athena Alliance)

"Mary Adams and Michael Oleksak bring a much needed new perspective on value and wealth to the M&A marketplace with this insightful book highlighting Intangible Capital. Because of the primary historical focus on tangible assets only, financial advisors and investors of all types would be well served to study this overview very carefully before doing deals in this new century. Seeing the intangible side of a business as the 'New Factory' truly is now an essential skill for middle market dealmakers of all types." (Michael R. Nall, Founder, Alliance of M&A Advisors)

"In the sea of hype about how different the world of enterprise is today, Intangible Capital: Putting Knowledge to Work in the 21st Century Organization by Mary Adams and Michael Oleksak offers a perspective that is simple, pragmatic and profound. There are no over simplified formulas, no tedious academic discussions – just solid well grounded insights into what is most critical for success today. They clearly identify the roots of wealth creation, the networking skill sets that are required to realize value and the new accounting guidance system that keeps everything on track. Adams and Oleksak have created one of the most readable and practical books ever on intangibles!" (Verna Allee, CEO ValueNetworks.com and author of The Future of Knowledge: Increasing Prosperity through Value Networks)

"With the perspective uniquely available to bankers-turned-management consultants, Mary Adams and Michael Oleksak brilliantly weave the sometimes-esoteric paradigms of accounting, finance, and intellectual capital into an accessible operational framework. Intangible Capital while actionable, is unquestionably a revolutionary call to action. It is a must-read for any business leader who wants to know how to extract the most benefit from today's sources of business value." (Nir Kossovsky, Executive secretary, Intangible Asset Finance Society and author of Mission: Intangible. Managing risk and reputation to create enterprise value)

Captured! The Omnipotent Intangible.
By Paul Clargo
Excellent book.

Intangible Capital is an excellent insight into a mature and smart approach to running a business. I found the book demonstrates the importance of intangible assets and maps out how to identify these assets, make them visible in accounting terms and increase the value of a company. But perhaps more importantly to me, the book explains how to leverage intangible assets to create growth and in this time of economic crisis smart, long-term thinking may be the essential ingredient that has been missing in developing sustainable businesses and long-term growth and profits. Intangible Capital (often called intellectual capital) demonstrates there is a smarter way of analysing and progressing a business since the intangible is omnipotent and therefore unavoidable, this means if we are not managing the intangible assets of the business we are not really managing the business to its full potential (Mary & Michael point out that more than 70% of business assets are intangible).

I found the book packed with real surprises, while the book is well laid out and very informative, some pages were extremely enlightening and kept me wanting more, there are so many lessons for top managers, middle and lower managers, all employees and students within these pages. The book highlights that managers should be aware of their intangible capital so that they are able to assess how it impacts current performance and how they will be able to improve future performance through improved understanding and control of intangible assets. This means that more intelligent decisions are possible improving people, process and relationships and reducing or eliminating risk. Capturing intangibles is made easier with a series of worksheet exercises enabling readers to apply the lessons from the book, this gives the book real value to a business far greater than the few dollars invested in its purchase, since the execution matters a great deal more than the idea, Mary and Michael show you not just the 'why' but the 'how' aswell!

Mary and Michael state that they 'are out to help business people everywhere get a little smarter' and this book certainly achieves this objective. Certainly, knowledge of Intangible Capital is a must for business leaders everywhere, this type of thinking should be available at all levels of education to help nurture great future leaders! The new economy that will rise out of this great recession will do no better without the lessons from 'Intangible Capital'. Perhaps now, after this practical handbook, the business world will start analysing and tracking its intangible capital and use the knowledge to develop real long-term sustainable results in a new smarter perspective.

IC field manual for senior managers
By Ed Wike
The first thing to know about intangible capital (IC), and why it is important, is the sheer scale involved. In the typical company in today's knowledge economy the value of intangibles (e.g., knowledge, processes, intellectual property, relationships with customers and partners, competencies, experience, brands, and reputation) is estimated at 70% of total company value. Annual corporate expenditures on intangibles now exceed tangible expenditures by a wide margin. The totals are in the trillions.

The next thing to know about intangible capital, and why this book is important, is that managing intangible capital is relatively new and not well understood; plus, as the book explains, there is a serious deficiency with the way companies report and account for their IC expenditures, if at all. The importance of these issues has motivated the authors, leading IC experts with experience in commercial banking and strategy consulting, to write this book as the first milestone of their mission to address them. That's where the book drives to, and there's a wealth of information for the reader along the way.

With Intangible Capital: Putting Knowledge to Work in the 21st-Century Organization, Mary Adams and Michael Oleksak have created, essentially, an IC field manual for senior managers with specific, practical advice on how to manage their intangible capital to grow their businesses in the knowledge economy. In the book, they paint the full IC landscape, combining a comprehensive introduction to the subject with an extensive survey of topics and research that benefit the novice and expert reader alike. In a non-clichéd, conversational style, they describe the components of the knowledge-based enterprise as a knowledge factory using analogies with industrial-age factory counterparts. For example, intangibles are the new raw materials, networks are the new organization charts, and orchestration is the new management. The exposition is rich in content and illustrated with interesting examples, including recent high profile cases in the chapter on company reputation and why that is critical for intangible capital. One highlight not to miss is an ingenious 3-D modeling method that uses Lego blocks to represent how a company generates profits from their knowledge. An example for Google can be seen on YouTube ("You Can Grow Like Google").

The knowledge factory analogy (the New Factory) continues with a section on the New Management (with an interesting chapter on innovation) and concludes with a section on the New Accounting (providing the IC viewpoint for implementing key performance indicators, metrics, and dashboards). At this point, having educated the reader on the subject of intangible capital, the authors call attention to an important problem with current IC accounting/reporting practices; then they masterfully combine their banking and IC expertise to propose a logical and compelling solution. All in all, it's quite a story.

A book for every business hoping to survive in the 21st Century
By M.H. Imm
This book opens the door to new thinking on old subjects. Bankers have been talking about making "air ball" loans for years. Institutional lenders and investors talk about "cash flow lending". They are really talking about loans based on Intangible Capital. But before this book, who's had the tools to follow how this important part of a business enterprise is managed and valued? This book draws parallels to the ways businesses managed their tangible capital assets and the way lenders and investors valued such capital. Must reading for any investor or manager of the typical 21st century business, where value is most often being created "out of thin air" and there aren't the tangible assets to point to as an explanation of the value of the business.
