Does being a skilled yogi give one superpowers—and if so, how can we prove it? In this latest, Radin (The Conscious Universe) holds the ancient practices and theories of yoga up to the discerning lens of modern science. He maps yoga's migration from East to West, its evolution from past to present, and he examines the practice's ur-text: a 2,000-year-old manuscript known as the Yoga Sutras. Where, then, does science fit in? While Radin, a senior scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, is frequently critical of the discipline, he nevertheless argues that an array of tests may be able to lend credence to siddhis (psychic phenomena like telepathy and precognition) and some of yoga's other more mysterious claims. Radin's Most Reader-Friendly Book Yet

Dean Radin has put together something pretty special in "Supernormal." His first two books are fantastic and are must-reads for anyone interested in psi research. Nonetheless, they are not quite so reader-friendly as this one is. Radin starts off by asking whether or not the Buddha amassed such a worldwide following simply on account of being a "nice guy" with morally edifying teachings or if, perhaps, he and Christ and any number of other religious figures may have actually had some of the paranormal capacities they have been historically noted for having. Intrigued? I was.

Radin then gives us a tour de force survey of Patanjali's views on yoga and the manner in which contemplative practices have been known for several millennia to produce psi abilities in those who are disciplined enough to undergo them. I found this to be one of the most interesting aspects of the book - a top notch scientist actually bridging the realms of spiritual and scientific endeavor into a single whole. This competent bridging of science and spirituality is something I've been waiting all my life to see and my feeling while reading was one of hope: that this book might be among the first of an emerging new genre.

As the book progresses, we get to hear about Radin's newer psi experiments and the very exciting findings he has been getting in the last several years. There is much to digest here in regard to what these findings mean about being human and about our potential to develop and understand ourselves in exciting and meaningful new ways. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in non-dogmatic spirituality. Anyone who appreciates both the method of science and the aim of religion stands to gain a great deal from Radin's "Supernormal."

Superjob!

I did not read this book looking for evidence of extraordinary psychic abilities. I have experienced many of the things that are discussed here, beginning almost forty years ago, and since that time my search has been for the truth about what they are, where they come from and how to get more of them in my life. Over the years, that search has evolved from being part of the content of my life to being the context of my life.

One thing this book has done for me is to fill in some of the holes and gaps in my picture of what it is and how it works (the "it" being "life"), from an organized, logical and expanded perspective. If I had this book at the beginning, I am certain that I would be at least ten years younger now than I am. But, of course, this kind of book didn't exist forty years ago, and barely exists today, no thanks to the community in which the author matured. The "Scientific Community" itself is the main roadblock to not only this kind of book, but also to unlocking the mysteries of the universe which will allow us to thrive, excel and actualize our full potential, and may be the answer to our survival as individuals and as a species. So this subject is not some obtuse esoteric woo-woo BS the critics try to make it out to be, it is something everyone on the planet should have high on their list of priorities, "the possibilities in being human."

As I read through the book, there were parts I skimmed over. I am not interested in details of an experiment designed to provide evidence of precognition or telepathy. I have had direct experience of both, and a variety of others. I was bored last time I saw that information in some of Radin's work, or someone else's work. But as I stand back and look at this work as a whole, it looks to me as though a mild-mannered reporter of the Daily Truth has slipped into a phone-booth (are they still around?) and transformed into someone who kicked butt, named names, and, as always, done his homework thoroughly. He has provided irrefutable evidence for his thesis and at the same time said to his critics (who have the attitude, "my mind is made up, don't confuse me with the facts"), "calling it `woo-woo' and then disregarding it totally is no longer acceptable. Here are the facts, take your best shot. Fundamentalism in science is about as constructive and useful as it is in the middle-east or in the US Congress." (Maybe that last sentence is just my interpretation, and if I were to expand my interpretation, I would say to critics named in this book, "consider your butt kicked, and if you don't like it, respond to the kicking as described herein").

So, I give this book five stars, because I can't give it ten. I call it "spherical perfection" because if you stand back and look at it from any direction it is perfect. I only hope that if Superdean ever decides to look for a sidekick, I get the chance to audition.

SUPER IMPORTANT

This book is about the current state of affairs in the scientific field of legitimate psi and paranormal research. For those who are unfamiliar with the author, Dean Radin is one of the world's most towering forces active in this field. Radin is also the head of the Institute of Noetic Science (IONS), established almost 40 years ago by former American astronaut and moon-walker Dr. Edgar Mitchell. IONS is today one of the world's foremost research institutes for the study of "consciousness." Though the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), as one of the leading science institutes in the world, formally inducted the Para-psychological Association into its organization in 1969, the ugly truth is the majority of the science and academic leaders in the world continue to snub their noses and ignore the important research, knowledge and cutting-edge progress that has been made in the field of parapsychology over the last 50 years. The biased cynicism of these dinosaurs is totally unacceptable and diametrically opposed to legitimate advancement in any age of reason. As a great man once said - "The discovery of important new knowledge is entirely irrelevant to its implications."
DR. Radin uses the subject and history of Yoga, and some of the more fantastic claims by its ancient adherents as a backdrop to present many of the legitimate new research projects and current evidence which supports the factuality and existence of consciousness as a distinct force of nature and integral component of the universe. He also describes some of the most current repeatable scientific testing and results which strongly support the legitimacy of genuine paranormal presence in many humans. This book is written for the layman and is highly understandable to any reader with a high school diploma or the equivalent. Radin's style is light and breezy with a good portion of wit and cheeky humor mixed in. He also explains the hypocrisy and core controversies behind the atheistic, scientific-materialist's worldview. If you have any interest in learning more about consciousness, the human brain and its ultimate potential this book is an absolute must-read and belongs in your library.

Many urbanites sojourn in the West to commune with nature in the wide-open spaces, but few have related their experiences, or so fully captured the essence of Wyoming, as well as this author. She was sent from New York to the Big Horn region in 1976 to make a film about sheepherders. To recover from the death of a loved one, she wandered near and far for two years before returning to northern Wyoming, where she finally found solace. The vivid descriptions of the physical aspects of her surroundings are more than balanced by her poetic commentaries on the nature of the sheepherders, cowpokes, and Native Americans who inhabit the area. A love affair with Wyoming

Gretel Erlich was a poet and filmmaker when she first came to Wyoming in 1976. She was so taken with everything about the place that she became a cowherd, which gave her time to write about the American West. Reading her books, however, is very much like seeing a film, for her filmmaker's eye and awareness of nuance and gesture is evident in the way she chooses her words.
In The Solace of Open Spaces, Erlich presents us with an eclectic bunch of frontier characters that she met while working as a ranch hand. Almost unaware of what's been accomplished, we readers find ourselves shedding former stereotypes of these people in exchange for seeing them for what they are: unique, quirky, interesting, inexplicable men and women. The Weather (and the word deserves that capital letter, as you'll see upon reading the book) plays as large a role as the people in Ehrlich's book.
About the title: When she arrived in Wyoming, Erlich was grieving the death of someone important to her. As she works hard at physical labor, meets new people, falls in love with the land, and sheds her past like sweat running down her back, healing from grief occurs - although she doesn't exactly say this.
Altogether, a beautiful book and a wonderful read.

The West seen through a filmmaker's eye

In these essays about Wyoming, the imagery of mountain and plain and weather calls to mind the sweeping landscapes of John Ford movies. Ehrlich, born and raised in California, retains her outsider's eye for detail, and is able to translate the perspective of someone trained in documentary filmmaking very effectively into the medium of words.

Her portrayal of the men who work in this environment is very different from the stereotypes we know from Marlboro ads, "Bonanza," and movie westerns. She finds cowboys often tender-hearted, quirky, and curiously courtly. Not to be outdone by the men in this world of extremes and hard work, the women she meets and befriends are tough-minded and independent. Completing her picture are the Native Americans, whom she portrays respectfully and with an ironic appreciation for incongruity, as they both recover and reinvent a lost heritage.
Hers is also a personal story. Beginning with the wrenching death of a close male friend, it recounts in her growing love for Wyoming and its people the discovery of a new life. And while her book is no heart-on-the-sleeve display of pain and recovery, one senses at almost every step the healing process that underlies the words. As slender as a book of poems, this volume of essays calls out to be read slowly and savored, word for word.

An affirmation of life in a large landscape

My first images of Wyoming were formed as a boy, watching "The Virginian" on TV. It was a landscape of gently rolling hills and a mild climate where you could go around in shirtsleeves pretty much all the time. Well, of course, Wyoming bears no resemblance to a Southern California back lot, as I learned when I finally went there as an adult. The climate is not benign, and the land has a scale that can make you and your problems seem very small indeed.
Gretel Ehrlich writes about the true Wyoming of vast, lonely spaces, and brutal, bone chilling winters. In her book, it is a place to lose oneself and then find redemption in the rhythm of life lived in a hard place. She writes about the people that live in this place and their relationships.She writes of lonliness and endurance, friendship and new beginnings.

Why I like it better than Strongs

Most concordances let you trace an English word through the Bible. But, is it really the same word? Is ``infirmity'' astheneo (weakness) or nesos (sickness) in this verse? Both Youngs and Strongs give you the Hebrew or Greek word. However, Youngs gives you all the translations of the ``original'' word, so that you can trace just that word. One English word may actually be several different Hebrew or Greek words. Likewise, one Hebrew or Greek word may actually be translated by several English words. Straighten it all out with Youngs, without having to become a language scholar.

Very Helpful Book!

I wanted to start being a vegetarian ever since I encountered this organization that advocates about animal welfare. It is not PETA, though I have tried to watch some of the videos of PETA to know more about it. Nonetheless, I’ve been trying to become a vegetarian for a month now, and it is really difficult. Grade 5–9—Designed in the style of such books as Ernest Drake's Dragonology (Candlewick, 2003), this large, colorful, well-illustrated volume has many foldouts and removable pieces. It is an attractive browsing item, although it may not hold up well in long-term circulation. The cover, which looks as if it were bound in the scaly blue skin of Eragon's dragon, Saphira, adds a slightly creepy touch. The drawings, while not spectacular, are nicely done and appealing. The Guide's contents, presented as if written by Eragon, introduce readers to the peoples and creatures of the realm—elves, humans, Urgals, Dwarves, and Dragons—along with quick overviews of the series' history and culture. Crammed with detailed maps, insightful bestiaries, time lines, and legends, this might be problematic for some libraries who won't want to circulate an edition with delicate mini books and physical samples featured on nearly every spread. These textural asides include soft Feldunost fur, scratchy dragon wing, elven fabric, glittery star-sapphire dust, and a genuinely surprising gift at the book’s end. Weak text, pretty pictures

My immediate reaction to Christopher Paolini's newest book: Is this a blue edition of "Dragonology"?

No, apparently it's "Eragon's Guide to Alagaesia," a rather bare-bones encyclopedia of the history, peoples, creatures and assorted trivia of Christopher Paolini's imaginary world. The text doesn't tell the readers much that the books haven't also told them, but it's a prettily arranged book with some extremely impressive pictures and intriguing clarifications of known facts (like what the heck a shrrg is).

It opens with a little envelope with a letter from Paolini's protagonist, promising to show readers more about Alagaesia. After a brief welcome page, Paolini explores the various aspects of his imaginary world, each with their own little section: Alagaesia's maps and cities, geographical features (the Forest of Stone), plants (the Fricai Andiat mushrooms), animals (the dragonesque fanghur), the dragons and the Dragon-riders, the city of Tronjheim and the forest of Ellesmera, and so on and so forth.

It also studies the various bipedal races of Alagaesia, and (of course) the Elves are vastly overrepresented -- humans and Urgals each get one page, while the Elves get four and the Dwarves get two. Paolini also informs readers about their weapons, their homes, their language (complete with a very short fold-out "Dwarvish/Elvish for Beginners"), their clothes, and unique qualities like Isidar Mithrim (I still don't understand why it was so high up).

If you've read the books of the "Inheritance" series, then you probably will know about 95% of the information contained in "Eragon's Guide to Alagaesia." It's a prime opportunity for Paolini to expand his universe with historical, magical and character information that wouldn't fit neatly in a novel, but would work nicely in a guide. Buuuuuut... he doesn't do this. Almost all of what he tells us is in his novels -- the Menoa Tree, Blagden, and anybody hoping for New Cool Revelations will be disappointed.

But he does expand some stuff -- there's a rather bare-bones timeline of Alagaesian history, an interesting section on Dwarf mythology and gods, and he finally tells us just what "shrrgn" are.

And while the actual info is lackluster, there are some truly lovely illustrations in this book -- lovely watercolors and pencil drawings, ranging from pale pencil sketches to full-page color pictures (like Glaedr and Saphira). You can tell which creatures are evil, like the Empire dragons, the Kull and the Lethrblaka -- they're all black'n'white, spiny and scabby-looking. The highlights are the vast pictures of Ellesmera and Tronjheim -- the former is a grassy, misty-green tangle of lacy dwellings and tree houses reminiscent of Peter Jackson's Lothlorien; the latter is an epic view of the sunlit, glittering city in a circle of light, surrounded darkness, shadows, farmland and rolling clouds.

Physically, this book is made in the "Dragonology" mold -- faux scale cover, faux gems, shiny "gedway ignasia" and lots of little pockets, envelopes, fold-out sections, and hidden items (fur, a polyester flower, an elf token, paper dragon-knucklebones, "jewel" glitter dust) as well as some "letters" from Eragon to the reader.

"Eragon's Guide to Alagaesia" is essentially a glittery bonus for Paolini collectors, because virtually all of the information is pretty much old news (we KNOW the Menoa tree story!). But it has lovely, lovely pictures.

Cool design but it lacks content and has an abundance of cheesiness.

First off i want to say i LOVE the Inheritance cycle so far. Great books, well written, and well thought out. Now the review of this book.

I was really disappointed with this book. I thought it would clear up some things and maybe give me some incite into the next book.

I'm not normally a negative person but this was a real letdown.

The information:
Even someone who has read the books just once will know everything in this book. Personally i think this book damaged my opinion of Paolini being a detailed and in-depth writer.

The art:
To me it seemed fairly obvious that several of the contributing artists either had not read the books at all or they just totally ignored all of Paolini's descriptions. One of the artists must have been a mega fantasy/World of Warcraft artist because he gave all this art spikes jutting out at every angle. In the end most of his art ended up looking more like i sticker bush than what it was intended to be.

The Cheesiness:
Really? A patch of Feldonost fur(a little piece of some fuzzy fur you can feel)? Also right under the fur it goes on to say that the Feldonost grow wool which is totally different from fuzzy fur. Their depiction of a gedwey ignasia is a hand print with a perfect oval, silver sticker in the middle. They also put in a little dragon wing to feel(glitter glued to paper). This is not only cheesy but wrong because dragon wing is described as suede leather in the books not sandpaper. Last but not least is Glader's heart of hearts(a small plastic jewl in the back of the book).

If you've read the books you wont learn anything. Unless you are reading the books to your 4 year old kids and need a visual aid this book isn't worth it.

Gorgeous coffee table book!

I just got this and absolutely love it. I can't believe it was done for this price. The cover is truely a work of art and I am going to buy another one for a gift. I didn't get it to glean information as I can use the internet for that after reading the books. Looking through this book is certainly a temptation for those who have not read the books as I already had someone look at mine and borrow my copy of Eragon. The pictures are beautiful and lots of clever and well done little booklets and secrets inside. I am impressed. I suppose if you buy it to learn something that is not in the books, perhaps you might be disappointed, but that wasn't my purpose. I love the beauty of this story and this book illustrates that very well. It is displayed on my sofa table with a blue dragon statue - looks great!

I also liked the way it was done as if Eragon himself was sharing the information with us. Great idea.
