As a comic reader who loved Volume 1, Volume 2 does not disappoint

I have an interesting relationship with the Peculiar Children series. when I read the first novel it was because I had read its graphic novel adaptation first, due to it grabbing my attention as a comic book reader. After reading it I loved it so much that I had to read the source material as most novels that get the comic book treatment usually turn out so poor (especially ones of the young adult variety). After reading both I grew to love this series in general and wished to purchase the next entry in the series. When Hollow City came out I enjoyed it but was left wondering when the graphic novel version would be coming, while it took longer than I would have wanted its finally here. I'm happy to say that it lives up to the quality of the first graphic novel and just like its predecessor is a great comic in-itself and suitable adaptation of the novel as well. Based on Ransom Riggs novel, volume 2 of this series decides to leave the Big Fish meets X-Men like tone and story of the first volume and instead takes it in a new direction. This time (without spoiling too much) we're treated to a thriller/chase story across the desolate lands of the world during WWII and mostly involves our favorite characters from volume 1 surviving. It's a satisfying middle chapter and leaves you on the traditional cliffhanger. The art/comic translation from Cassandra Jean is fantastic feeling consistent with what we saw from volume 1 while being slightly more raw and harsh in order to fit the new setting and tone. The meshing of Riggs novels and Jean's art make for a truly great comic series, that can be enjoyed even without reading the novels. The only downside is the lack of a sneak peak for the next volume, which worries me on whether or not we will even get a graphic novel adaptation of volume 3. It would be an immense shame for them not to finish this trilogy of comics.

It displayed the words so small that I couldn't read it on my Android phone. I would have liked to continue reading the story, having read the first book, but I don't know why this one's graphics were so tiny. I'll have to get one in print.

Conflating Economic Privilege and White Privilege Does Not Help Address the Real Problem of White Privilege

Yes, "white privilege" is a real thing. Yes, Black Lives Matter. Yes, we all need to do much more to understand why life is very different for white and black (and brown and Latino and Asian and...) in America.

Still, this book is such an unrealistic portrayal of life for most white people in the US that it is likely to exacerbate tensions rather than help resolve them.

As other reviewers have pointed out, Ms. Irving has conflated much of her economic privilege into her white privilege. She readily admits to a very upper class (let's not even try for "upper middle class") background but then seems to think that this kind of upbringing has given her the same experiences as the "rest of us," who have often had to deal with limited choices because of the less than affluent communities and schools we inhabit.

Further, it is almost beyond belief that a person given the privileges she has had could be quite so uninformed about the real world. Are all white people as blind to reality as she seemed to be before "waking up white?" I find that difficult to believe. Here, for example, is one of her early experiences in the real world of work.

Irving completed four years of college at "very white" Kenyon college and then spent an extended time on a study abroad program in "also very white" Vienna. She then returned and used her father's extensive connections to get an internship at WGBH, Boston's premier public radio station.

On her very first day at the station, this new intern with no job experience is approached by another staff person and is offered a position as managing director of a local dance company! Though she admits that she may not be well qualified, she still takes the job.

As Irving tells it, one of her first grants at the dance company provides funding to bring 500 "inner city children" to the Boston Shakespeare Theater to watch a daytime dance program. She expects that this experience will be a wonderfully welcome opportunity for the kids. Imagine her surprise then when the lines of school buses begin bringing the students to the theater.

"When the kids started pouring off the buses, I couldn't believe how many were black...I had never seen so manyh black faces in one place in my life. I felt complete shock that 'inner-city' seemed to equate with 'black!'" (page 108)

Really? One can spend more than 20 years in the US, at apparently good schools, can listen to a public radio station with all kinds of diverse programming, and still be "shocked" that inner-city and black are synonymous in her city?

It is this kind of removal from everyday life that makes Waking Up White a very unhelpful book. It can only reinforce stereotypes some of other races may have about all whites, and it is so totally not real world that most whites with far less economic coddling are likely to just blow it off as so much "liberal pandering." There are far better works out there that address what is a real problem without making things worse.

"Invisible" White Culture inhibits Inclusiveness: Please read this book, my fellow white people.

I thought I was further along in my journey of understanding racism after 15 years of work. This book opened my eyes to many more of my own behaviors that can be problematic for people of color. Debby Irving's descriptions of "not wanting to look stupid" or "not wanting to offend", so just avoiding or keeping quiet when uncomfortable was SO familiar. The thought that schools were a place of fear for many African American parents, such that they didn't feel comfortable advocating for their children was mind-blowing and disheartening, but upon reflection, totally reasonable. And the reality that black anger can easily be dismissed by white administrators who avoid conflict reduces their likelihood of success. How many times would I try before I gave up, given the same obstacles???

I appreciated the list of dominant white male culture behaviors, and the discussion of how they can be both good and bad, depending on the situation. For those who have read this far, the list follows:
Conflict avoidance, Valuing formal education over life experience, Right to comfort/entitlement, Sense of urgency, Competitiveness, Emotional restraint, Judgementalness, Either/ Or thinking, Belief in one Right way, Defensiveness, Being status oriented.

Personally, I would add one more, Seeing ourselves as Individuals more than members of a group. (the white group)
This book made me think deeply about how these behaviors inhibit attempts to be more inclusive of folks who have different views, and how I can behave differently.

If we white people continue to avoid honest discussions across the racial divide our forefathers erected, we will never benefit from the amazing gifts other cultures can offer, and we will stay in a fearful state. White and Awakened

Every White person in the USA should be required to read this book. I am a white, male, sixty plus year old who was born and raised in North Carolina. As I lived in Massachusetts, and California I became acutely aware of how little white people understand what it is like to be a person of color in our country. In the southeastern US I was exposed to people who were in the Ku Klux Klan. People who bragged about lynching people of color and brutal behaviors of all kinds. This book details not only the consequences of openly malicious behavior, but also the subtleties that people of color have to endure. This book will raise your level of sensitivity to all races. It will make you a better person. I know, because of the affect it had on my life and my relationships with people of color. Many thanks to Debby Irving for sharing her journey toward the perfection of me.

Don't worry, all the saucy and steamy stories he hinted at in his AMA are covered and then some. Like that 7-way orgy he briefly detailed amid the torrent of questions during his AMA. Not to mention the hunky straight gym jock who "went gay" and the poor girl who... shall we say, her lady place was a wreck after one time with DDD. It's all in there and more!

Written from first person perspective the narrative is raw, honest and often times gritty. Details are not spared and readers beware, naughty moments are revealed! The next time you see a man on the street with more than an adequate bulge in his jeans, it might just be DDD.

Bummer

DDD needs an experienced coauthor, or at least better editors. His life and experiences are fascinating but the book is a frustrating, clumsy letdown. I read the first two thirds in under an hour. The book starts off promising; while obvious that he isn't a professional writer, he does begin with genuinely touching anecdotes about his parents. The first third of the book goes downhill swiftly, with dull and clumsy storytelling that is still somehow frustratingly brief. There's no "meat" to them, no pun intended. The second third of the book literally reads like a collection of hardcore erotica. To his credit, DDD is much more in his element telling us about his sexcapades. This part of the book could stand on it's own as a collection of erotic short stories. The final third was frankly unbearable. It's just copied and pasted Q&A from reddit and Tumblr. The questions were not only repetitive but most had already been addressed previously in the book.

DD-Disappointing

Like many of you, I read this book because I was curious -- not so much about DDD's sexual exploits, but who he is as a person, and what shaped his world view. Sadly, I was terribly disappointed with Double Header, and I'll explain why I notched it 2-stars...

1. Grammar, spelling, punctuation, and the like. While I am by no means an expert on any of the prior, I am a voracious reader who can, for the most part, glaze past errors when they are intermittent and not overly distracting. The sheer number of them in this book, especially with a list price of $8.00, is unforgivable. It's true: there is no "perfect" book, but if there is a publishing house behind the release of this one (which I will touch on momentarily), they should feel terrible about the product they are passing along to readers and make every effort to correct them ASAP.

2. The lies. I can understand that most books, especially tell-alls, are typically padded for salaciousness, but the lies in this book (and we're talking silly lies without a real point) are so disappointing it forced me to call into question almost all of DDD subsequent claims. In the foreword DDD says that there is a publishing house behind him on this project and that he has signed away all monetary gains from the publication of his story and in turn the publishing house has moved mountains to protect his identity, except when you look on the page for the book, the publisher is listed as DDD Publishing. ::scratches head, raises eyebrows, tilts head, looks sideways::

3. The ludicrousness of DDD's sexual ventures. Okay, whatever. Maybe I'm a prude, maybe I'm a bit too white bread...but there are some stories in this book that just don't pass the sniff test (as a woman, with woman parts, there is one in particular that made me cringe due largely to the perfectly impractical reaction of his female partner). I'll leave out spoilers, for the sake of those buying this book, but if you do read it you'll probably know what I'm talking about...

4. The convenience of the stories (wanted to be anonymous, had passed away, 'I didn't get your name...'). Yes, I did the math. If DDD has been sexually active for 8 years, that's equivalent to engaging a new partner every 2.9 days (roughly); yet he says he doesn't have sex with strangers (despite the stories he shared being about perfect strangers and their encounters...). And of those 1,000 people, not one has come forward to either confirm nor debunk his claims despite the press he's currently getting? He claims this is because he doesn't use the internet, but the internet isn't mutually exclusive, so I find this hard to believe...

The list goes on, but for me, the horse is dead and I'm hanging up my beating tool.

I have my suspicions on DDD...but it all just gut feelings. I think the book is well meaning, and if you can gloss over the errors and if you're not opposed to graphic sexual stories, there is some beauty in message: That 'we' are not tiny freak shows, that 'we' are human beings capable and deserving of love, that 'we' are perfect because of our imperfections. I simply have a hard time believing the messenger, and ergo, for me personally, the message was lost. I wish DDD well on his journey through humanhood and I hope he comes out on the other side of this okay. Call it my gut, but have feeling that after the glow comes the storm, as so happens in cases like this (A Girl's Guide to Homelessness, A Million Little Pieces)... there are a lot of smart people on the internet.

Not for everyone, but I loved it.

First off, I have never read any of DDD's AMA stuff. I found out about this book from a third part on Tumblr, looked like something I would enjoy and I did/do. Still not done, yes you can read it quickly, but I am taking my time to enjoy his sense of humor. He is an inexperienced author, but that is fine, he is telling you about his life and is telling it like a person sitting down with you over coffee. Very personal (VERY PERSONAL..) and very candid. DDD does not hold back and IMO the reader is given something more for it. Not for everyone, not for the prudish, conservative or just unwilling to experience life. DDD lays it all out for you to take or leave with no reservations or apologies. Truly an enjoyable read, wish he would do short stories though...

Great book for the instance runners

I really like this series of books, they are well written and do a good job of explaining what is going to happen inside the instances (dungeons). They give little hints here and there that are a great help. On dungeons that require you stand in a certain spot they tell you where and give pictures. The loot tables are great help if you are looking for certain items. Good book and a great read. I always have it when I run through dungeons. Downside is as Warcraft is updated the book will not have current info and loot tables, so web sites will have the most current info but the boss battles still remain the same.

Extremely Useful

I ordered this from Games for Sale and received it Saturday- very fast! The maps are accurate with my Carbonite maps. My Guild put it to good use and we raided 4 Dungeons in 2 days w/o a lot of hangups. What I find extremely helpful is the info on where to get the Keys and what we need for the quest to make them. Also Boss lists! Who we have to get for the Achievement and where the Bosses are. Awesome! Very Helpful!

Our guild was preparing to start raids in Kara and we needed information on how to fight the bosses. None of us had ever been in there, except maybe to replace someone for a boss fight. This guide has helped our group get a complete clear. When someone suggests doing something else other than the guide it seems to fail most of the time. The successes we have had were when we followed the advice in the guide. This is a great guide for all of the instances with burning crusade including the heroic dungeons. A HUGE Help! I highly recommend.

Extremely Informative

This book gave more information than I could have asked for from an unbiased view. Details include analysis for the motives of each artist and his contributions. This book even goes beyond the rocker spectrum to provide details for the inventions, their cultural diffusion, and how they influenced most genres we know today - All starting from what most would consider before the beginning as not to leave out any details. The author's descriptions are factual, yet insightful at the same time. The large index allows for you to put the information in your own order. Though not much detail is presented about the electronic inventions from a scientific angle, suggested listening and stories for each artist encourage extension of learning about the music of the twentieth century. If you want to learn about electronic music's hearth and spread across our world, I would recommend you The Ambient Century.

An eclectic encyclopedia, not a coherent analysis

(This is my 3/27/01 review of the original hardcover edition, which is available used for a lot less than this out-of-print paperback edition. For some reason the paperback is listed separately, which I only just now realized.)

Your evaluation of THE AMBIENT CENTURY will depend on what you're looking for. I expected serious analysis, and by that criteria would give it 1 star. If what you're interested in, though, is an eclectic encyclopedia of interesting 20th century musicians, loosely grouped by the theme of "ambience," which is never defined, then you might think this is great. (I can't comment on the fact-checking criticism, but to me it's a secondary point.) Prendergast moves from "high art" composers including Debussy and Stockhausen, to "minimalism," to rock, broken into categories such as psychedelic, krautrock and synthesizer music, to the '90s techno/house/drum&bass/ambient trend.

However, his definition of "ambient" involves "music being deconstructed" by Mahler and Debussy (sounds really "postmodern," but what does it mean?), and developments in technology/electronics, along with an "interest in pure sound." He pronounces: "[T]he bleeding heart of electronic progress had by its very nature rendered all recorded music, by definition, Ambient." (4) Given this sort of cosmic perspective Prendergast could have included all music, and what he does include seems to be more or less "cool stuff that I like." Harsh, I know, but does Bob Dylan's "Knocking on Heaven's Door," by any stretch of the conceptual imagination, belong on a list of the Essential 100 Recordings of 20th Century Ambient Music? If so, our author fails to offer any explanation. How about Led Zeppelin IV (ie, ZOSO)? I'm at a loss.

If the book was appropriately titled, I would have much less to criticize. But when you title a book "The Evolution of Sound in the Electronic Age," you lead the reader to expect some sort of theoretical analysis -- what sort of evolution? In what direction? What mechanisms are involved? But there is "no there there" if what is happening is just technological progress, and "an interest in pure sound" may characterize Cage's famous *4'33"* (the silent composition), but there is not even an attempt here to argue that it is the direction of 20th century music. If Prendergast really means to emphasize the use of music as background, where is his discussion of Muzak, and music in advertising? He doesn't develop his embryonic theme(s), but rather rushes headlong into profiles of musicians, which are strung together with little connecting analysis.

Caveat emptor -- if you're looking for serious analysis, look elsewhere, but if you want a breezy journalistic encyclopedia of non-mainstream music circa 2000 (that was seen as cool by The Wire magazine) you might find this a useful reference work. (For a model of analysis of cutting edge music, check out Nyman's EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC. It also has a foreward by Brian Eno!)
