About the Author
After ground-breaking work as a scholar and literary critic, Frank Lentricchia changed his focus to fiction in the 1980s. Since then he has written a number of novels exploring the complexities of ethnic and artistic identity, mostly set in his home town of Utica, New York, where he was born to working-class parents.

This is simply a great and complex story in a little town that has ...

Full disclosure: I grew up in the very neighborhood that is the scene of this and other Elliot Conte novels. Lentricchia is a legend around these parts and he never disappoints. Utica is not just another little city. It is charmingly ethnic and the warmth comes to life in the Italian and Lebanese cafes, where the old guys hang out. It has always been diverse and we see numerous Bosnian Muslims, Russians and Latinos find their way into Conte's world. But Utica is also dark, filled with secrets, relatives who have disappeared, uncles who went away for three to five, unsolved murders, official corruption as a major industry. The Morelli Thing has it all. This is simply a great and complex story in a little town that has so many stories. Great stuff.

Okay, definitely held my interest

Okay, this was a different one for me. There were so many characters and so many of them were almost alike that I kept getting them confused - Morelli and Moretti - one was dead and one was not. That was a huge difference Ha! I chuckled a few times. I was kept interested, why I don't know. I guess it was just so crazy that I just had to stick with it just to see what this bunch of Italian guys were actually talking about. Bestseller it was not, but I can see how some people would like it.

For me, it was just okay.

still one of the best

After 30 years of its first publications, this book remains one of the best. It treats all the elements of a graduate course in analysis thoroughly. One of the few books that actually goes through construction of the real number system (in Chapter 1) and products of infinitely many measure spaces (in Chapter 6). There is plenty material to choose from, and all the standard topics are covered. In a very few cases notation is a bit cumbersome (or obsolete), but this is no big problem. Highly recommended to all graduate students in mathematics.

One of the best references on the subject

This is the kind of book I appreciate the most: one that's always got the information you need. This meticulous text covers thoroughly just every topic from elementary set theory up to product measures. It develops carefully all topics that should be included in standard analysis lectures (set theory, topology, Lebesgue integral, Banach and Hilbert spaces, differentiation, product measures) at such level of abstraction that the book turns out to be suitable for introductory courses, advanced courses, and later reference. The only one shortcoming I see is that the book includes no bibliography.

Excellent real analysis reference

In many applications today, such as PDE or harmonic analysis, it is crucial to have a really good grasp of the Lebesgue integral and absolutely continuous (rather than continuously differentiable) functions. Many real analysis books shy away from these matters.
Hewitt and Stromberg provide *every* detail, starting from scratch with measure theory, including Caratheodory's construction and fine distinctions such as Lebesgue vs. Lebesgue-Borel measurable sets. They proceed to discuss the Lebesgue integral in detail, then differentiation and absolutely continuous functions, the Lebesgue spaces including Riesz representation and a Banach space primer and finally integration on products (also infinite) of measure spaces. Fourier series and transforms are covered as well as fine details of (naive) set theory.
The book would be perfect if some standard analysis (Taylor series, analytic functions, Hospital rule, ...) was discussed; for this reason and because of its high level, it cannot be recommended as a book for 1st year calculus.

About the Author

Martin Evening is a UK-based photographer and noted expert in photography and digital imaging. In addition to being a best-selling author, Evening is a sought-after speaker and lecturer and is a member of the NAPP Photoshop Hall of Fame. He also works with the Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom engineering teams, consulting on new feature development and alpha and beta testing. An Essential Reference

Even though Lightroom is one of the more friendly pieces of image processing software around, there are still times when a user can't remember how to do something, or guesses that there might be a better way to do it, or really wants to delve deeper into one of its functions. That is where Martin Evening comes in.

This book provides a comprehensive look at Lightroom's functions. It's more like an encyclopedia than an instruction manual. Oh, there are chapters available that follow right along with the Lightroom workflow process from intake to output. It is possible to introduce one's self to Lightroom with this book. But unlike, say, Scott Kelby's The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter), there are no tutorials as such. Instead the entries read more like an encyclopedia, although arranged by workflow rather than alphabet. One really needs to know a little bit about how Lightroom works before this book proves most useful. If you don't you may not even know what to look up.

This book comes into its own once you start using the software. There is even an appendix that includes a section on hacking Lightroom. (Don't do it; as Evening explains there are easier, less dangerous ways to customize the software.) The author often illustrates his points with images showing the starting point and the effect of an adjustment that was made.

An example of Evening's going a step beyond is his discussion of camera calibration. He not only explains what Lightroom camera calibration is, but even tells you how to create a custom calibration. (Even though I've tried the process, I'm quite happy with the Adobe Standard Calibration, but if exact color matching is important to you, this could prove useful.)

I've kept a copy of prior versions next to my computer and referred to it whenever I had a question. Evening hasn't failed me yet. I expect to do so with the current volume. If I were beginning Lightroom, I wouldn't try to learn from this book, but as a regular user of Lightroom, I wouldn't be without it.

Simply the best

I own many Photoshop and Lightroom how to books, and Martin Evening pens by far the most comprehensive and well organized of them all. Evening is the only writer I know of that would get full price out of me. No silly jokes every paragraph, no back tracking, just enough illustration and simply spot on guidance. Its a lot of reading if that's the way you learn. I go into the program (Lightroom CC in this example) and use the index to cover my questions, and it works well for me. There are free resources online, but the depth of Mr Evening's knowledge is worth what you will spend on this book. Newbies and seasoned pros can get a lot from this. If learning Lightroom CC quickly and to the max is important, get this book!

A Beautiful and Comprehensive Volume for All Lightroom Users

I received Martin Evening's book in hopes to improve my abilities with Lightroom CC/6. I have been a LR user since LR3, and thought I had explored most of the program quite sufficiently for my needs. I didn't realize how much of the program I'd missed, including shortcuts, time-saving processes, and editing techniques that would have vastly improved my skills and my photo outputs, had I made use of a book like this one.

I am very impressed by the high-quality of this volume. Each page features elegant layout, color photographs, and in-depth examples and illustrations. It is a pure joy to reach anywhere in this book, to any page, and discover something new about the program that I use every day. The examples and techniques also give me fresh inspiration to reconsider edits I've done in the past. Not only do I want to revisit aspects of my photography, but I also now want to explore some of my ideas all over again. In short, I am inspired and excited to use this book as my companion for photography.

From start to finish, this book covers all possible types of photography, library organization, mobile features, and all output modules. It also goes very in-depth with all aspects of the develop module, including detailing many techniques for color and black and white editing. Beautiful, but could be better

The costumes and dolls pictured in this book are up to Mr. Tierney's usual fine standards. I agree with the previous poster that some of the doll faces don't quite look like the intended stars, and that some costumes have been used in other books and the inclusion of other stars and/or other costumes for variety's sake would have been nice.

My main reason for giving this item 4 stars rather than 5 are two errors in reproducing the costumes, which meticulous research could have avoided. The doll of Joan Crawford wears a costume from "The Women", a red sequined dance dress. The dress should be gold. Joan Crawford famously quoted of her rival, Norma Shearer, in the same movie, "Norma got the guy, but I got the gold sequined dress."

The doll of Bette Davis wears a black cocktail dress (from "All About Eve") which comes to just below the knee. In the film, the dress came to the ankle and was actually made of a heavy brown silk, with elbow-length cuffs and pockets at the waist, both trimmed in sable.

Overall, I think this is an outstanding effort to examine classic Hollywood costuming with biographical data on the designers.

Great Costumes

This is an inspired tribute by Tom Tierney the great costume designers of Hollywood's golden era. As is expected from Mr Tierney, the pieces are beautifully rendered and we are reminded of the time when costumes played a starring role in movies.

A few aspects of this work lowered my overall rating of its quality. Firstly, the rather odd concept was off-putting, that is, two dolls who serve as supports for costumes with detachable heads portraying the stars who wore them. Secondly, some of the heads don't look at all like the actresses in question, most notably Katharine Hepburn (the head actually looks like Raquel Welch), Marlene Dietrich and Rita Hayworth. Finally, some costumes have appeared in other works by Mr Tierney. Given the wealth of Hollywood costumes to choose from, there was no need for repetition.

That aside, there are some delightful illustrations. I especially liked the amusing portrayal of Jack Lemmon in "Some Like It Hot". The red gown from "Jezebel", the wedding dress from "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and the draped dress with a fur stole from "Sunset Boulevard" were also outstanding.

As a doll collector it is nice to have a good collection that includes dolls of all kinds. Recently I wanted to add some paper dolls to my collection and found several different ones on Amazon.
These were received in great condition and in the time promised!
