Good but not the best and expensive

If you're looking at building a library on PV or if your company is buying ... this is a good book to have.

BUT ..... it's expensive and as others have said it has european references and measures and doesn't have information relating to the National Electrical Code (NEC) of the USA. This should not be your only book.

If you're in the USA and you're a novice who's thinking of learning about solar or you want to take the NABCEP (North American Board of Certified Practitioners) entry level exam you ought to save yourself a $100 and buy "Photovoltaics: Design and Installation Manual" by Solar Energy International from Colorado.

If you are a technical person and understand electricity/high school physics you might choose "Photovoltaic Systems" from American Technical Publishers Inc. and the NJATC. This will take you up to and beyond the NABCEP entry level exam.

I have all three books and the last is used/read most .. but I've already taken the entry level exam.

Has some good info

This design book was written in Germany, so it follows the European standards. There is definitely some good information here, but if you want to follow the NEC rules for the USA, this won't help much. Try looking for information from John Wiles for that. US designers won't gain much from this book.

Excellent review of PV systems

This is an excellent review of PV solar systems, both from a technology and practical usage points of view, as they are currently being used in Europe. Guessing that this technology will gain importance in the US in the near future, this book should be very useful for anybody who is looking to get in depth information and/or planning to work in this field.

THAT was the kind of useless advice in the "book"

This "book" was a joke. I thought I was buying a book, but it is a pamphlet. The information was nothing more than what can be found with a quick search online or simply answered with common sense. How to learn about building a house? Do research online, read magazines, talk to people who have already built a home. THAT was the kind of useless advice in the "book". It was a waste of money, and the only reason I didn't send it back was because it made my husband laugh so much. He's convinced someone wrote a computer code to write this pamphlet. The cover image is badly photoshopped and fits perfectly with the entire charade of the publication. A fast one was definitely pulled here.

It's pretty amazing to come across a comprehensive guide about shipping container homes.This book is packed with advise, such as it is inexpensive, versatile, easy to build, durable, with abundant supply and most of all its environmental friendly. It involves everything that you need most from the start, on making designs all the way through getting final permits and certificate of occupancy. Great idea with the most thorough and detailed guide you'll find. I came to know a lot more from this guide and after reading it now I am planning to have my own shipping container house. I must recommend this guide to all.

ONE One Major Goal You Should Have
When people seek investments, they tend to have one goal in mind: They want to beat the market.

Don’t agree? Then tell me why you compare the performance of your investments with the S&P 500 Stock Index. You’re gauging your success by comparing your investment results with the overall market, as measured by the S&P 500, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, or some other stock-market index. If you’re beating the market, you’re happy. If you’re not, you’re unhappy.

Guess what? Trying to beat the market is the wrong goal.

In fact, that’s a disastrous goal. Taking that approach sets you up for failure.

Why? It’s really very simple. And we need look no further back than 2008 to understand why. In 2008 the S&P 500 lost 38.5%.I 1 If you lost only 30%, congratulations! You beat the market!

Somehow I doubt you (or your spouse) would be thrilled at such news.

Thus we must remember that “beating the market” isn’t the point. In fact, only one thing matters when it comes to investing: achieving financial security. That is your one major goal.

Think about it. The purpose of investing is to help you achieve your goals, whether that means sending your kids to college, retiring comfortably, or caring for aging parents. It’s financial security that matters, not some benchmark that has no relevance to your personal life.

People who focus on the stock market are missing the point. You need to emphasize your goals.

Excellent! This is an exceptionally good book for a tyro investor. It is free of jargon and complicated mathematical formulas and is an easy read so is not in the least intimidating for the tyro investor. When someone is first learning how to invest he or she must sort through the plethora of misinformation, wrong information, and nonsense that is out there in the investment arena. But Ric Edelman leads the tyro investor through the tangled jungle of the absolute multitude of investment nonsense out there in the world and gives the reader the simple tried and true in an easy to understand manner. I would recommend this book to anyone just learning how to invest. (I have already purchased a dozen copies of this book myself to give copies to friends and relatives. )

Really good practical advice. Not a lot of surprising info given the data that is presented and what we all have learned throughout life, but it is good to hear it from someone else. The way that the data is presented and explained is great. The author put his ideas into a tiny sized book and and then triple spaced everything!!! All it is is a pitch for you to turn over all your money and let his company "wisely" invest it for you. This is a scam. Go on the internet and read how poorly his company took care of other people's money.

'in Depth' says it all

Very informative and deep coverage of ClientDataSets. Everything from searching, filtering, and caching to saving the data locally is covered in this book. In this new world of mobile usage where a connection to the datasource is not always guaranteed, saving the change cache locally, then persisting to the remote database when connected is something that is handled by default by the ClientDataSet. Incredible and relevant technology for today even though it was created and first released in the mid-90's. This book explains ClientDataSets in an easy-to-read format, but it also has really good details that will be of good use to developers who have been using the technology for years. Thanks Cary for the insight and clarity into an amazing technology.

Jensen is one of the real pros in IT today going far beyond his extensive technical abilities and knowledge of contemporary programming. Jensen can actually COMMUNICATE clearly, effectively and thoroughly. His communication skills are outstanding and this combination of technical expertise and communication skills makes him unique in the modern IT world where it seems that all tutorials, demos and "white papers" are written for an audience with a nearly zero attention span. True, you have to stay awake and pay attention when you read Jensen's writing, but the rewards for your efforts are far greater than the effort it takes to gain them. We need more like Cary Jensen in IT; I wish we could clone him.

This book lacks foundation for beginners.

This book attempts a comprehensive look at ClientDataSets, but misses the mark for beginners. The first mistake the author makes is one many, many Delphi books make. The problem can be summarized as follows: "BDE is dead and no one in their right mind would do database development work today using the unsupported dead BDE, but because Delphi has sample BDE databases, I'll use BDE examples throughout."

This foolish idea of using a dead-end database structure sounds like a good idea when you hear the author describe it, but it doesn't translate to the new user. An experienced Delphi database developer would likely make the easy leap between how it is done with BDE as opposed to say dbExpress, but the beginner will not. This leaves the beginner lost right out of the gate. Trying to teach myself Delphi database programming, I wasted 20 hours tinkering just to figure out one simple mistake I was making while trying to recreate the books examples using mySQL and dbExpress. Granted the book cannot cover every database back-end and access method available, but starting with any of the non-dead options translates much easier to the other modern options than BDE. The author should have picked ADO, dbExpress, or even Interbase and used a real RDBMS back-end.

The second mistake the author makes is relying too heavily on the downloadable code examples rather than placing code examples directly in the book. This not only wastes a great deal of time flipping back and forth, but the downloaded code often doesn't show enough to be useful. Practical examples would do things every database programmer would do in a basic database app. Instead many of the downloaded code examples are simply 4 components strung together using their properties in an empty shell application. Yes the app displays data, but does nothing useful. Complete examples showing how to add, delete, edit, search for, lock, unlock, and avoid collisions with other users using more than dbGrid and a navigation bar would be extremely helpful. As it is, you'd think every database app revolves around dumping unformatted data into a dbGrid and having the end user hack away at it like a glorified spreadsheet.

Again, for the advanced developer needing to fill in a few missing pieces about how ClientDataSets work, I'm sure this book is fine. For the beginner, the book is a nightmare until you've wasted hundreds of hours experimenting your way past basic problems.

For the beginner, I'd rate this book 1.5 stars. For the more experienced developers three stars, and for those already doing database work but just needing a few gaps filled in, perhaps a bit higher.

Absolutely wonderful textbook in every way

INTRO BIOSTATISTICS PROFESSORS: I implore you, MAKE THIS THE REQUIRED TEXTBOOK FOR YOUR CLASS. I was deeply unimpressed with my biostatistics professor this semester, but am sure that no matter how good a professor you are, this book can still make your class even better for your students. I found myself thinking that, even if I had gained next to nothing from the lectures, I had at least gotten a fantastic textbook out of the class.

This textbook is both wonderfully informative and - something that has been said by very few people not destined to graduate with a degree in biostatistics, I'd wager - actually enthralling. Over and over, I was excited to see what the results of the examples were, ended up doing unnecessary practice questions just to see what they found out. (The consistency with which every single data set and experiment mentioned in the book is interesting is boggling.)

And the book makes sense! The book is very well-written and well-worded, with highly understandable explanations (and a sense of humor to ease frustration). Additionally, the math is accessible and understandable, even for those (like myself) who remember nearly nothing of calculus and have very poor mathematical intuition. For those more interested in the mathematical underpinnings, however, the book doesn't shy away from the proofs and functions - even when it admits that, at this point, tests are going to be completely computerized anyway.

I came into statistics knowing nothing but a general feeling of unease and frustration. Thanks mostly to this textbook, statistics seems actively *exciting* to me, and makes a lot of sense. I highly recommend it, for all levels of interest and skill.

Statistics Made Relevant and Easy

My initial thoughts before signing up for a required statistics college course were that this subject would be very math intensive, difficult to understand, and one that I would soon forget after the course. This book, however, made the subject of statistics very straightforward for a science major like me. While the math is fairly intense, I was surprised at the way the concepts behind the math were presented and how statistics was tied to the broader focus of effective experimental design. We used this book along with SPSS(statisical software) and I can say that I'm confident enough now to perform basic studies on my own. While I certainly will not remember the specific equations behind the various statisical tests, I certainly will remember the constitution of effective experimental design and the various assumption and pitfalls of statistical tests. The book itself is very readable, and includes specific examples from contemporary biological studies. The authors also have a good sense of humor. This book is essential for a science-major oriented statistical course. The book effectively accomplishes the objectives in the preface
Interesting Biology Examples, Intuitive explanation of key concepts, practical data analysis and experimental design, up to date basics, modern topics, and useful summaries/charts of concepts.
I'm amazed at how one can use an introductory book like this as a reference to point out flaws in highly academic, experimental studies in the scientific mainstream today.

You need it.

Great book. I have the Amaden-Crawford already and think it is a very good draping book. This one is , in my opinion, even better (not that the CAC one is bad).

First : The book begins with all the basics. Tools, fabric weaving, grain, marking style line, a quick reminder about facings and buttoned extensions etc...

Then : How to prepare the figure, with tape over the bust, lines, how to analyse and see the figure if working on a person instead of a dressform. Basic measurements that helps as guides

And finally comes the draping process. For the basic set (basic bodice, skirt and sleeve) They are both quite identical in result. The technic differs a little though. I tend to prefer the way HJA pins ease "fold" while draping : one of my major issue in draping is ease ('cause I've draped for several years by myself molding gowns and bustiers before getting into draping eased garment as dress and tailored jackets...)
But for the 2 darts bodice I really like the way CAC adds a grainline in the center of her princess panel. This really helped me.

I really like that she proposes 2 attachable arms the relaxed (for classic sleeves) and the straight arm (for raglans and kimonos).

Buyer beware

I've had this book for about a month and it is already falling apart. For the price I paid for this book, this shouldn't be happening. I've asked other classmates and they've all said the same thing. My rating reflects that of my disappointment. As for the book itself, it's okay but I wouldn't say it's the greatest book for beginners. I agree with a past reviewer that said this book is best used with an instructor.

Excellent book

This book is great for those with intermediary / advanced sewing skills who have a lot of creativity but still need a few pointers to make their sketches come true. It's an education. If you are a beginner and are serious about learning, it's a good investment too, just keep in mind the book assumes you already knows the basics and won't be holding your hand step-by-step.

Enjoyed it

This book gave me a basic knowledge and understanding of what to look for when choosing an investment. I already had an understanding of what I wanted to accomplish, but this book gave me the tools to dig deeper into the kind of information that will allow me to make an educated decision with my investing strategy. Great read.

I must admit that finances was never a subject that interested me. I always found the subject boring and too complicated, never really took the time to read about it.

Not long ago I had to make some investments choices. Since my background on the subject was limited, it was a bit harsh to make the proper decisions.

This book gladly helped me understand the process of stock market and gave me good references for the future. It is explained keeping in mind that the reader is, like me, a beginner in the field or does not want to read big and painful bbooks... And at the end you find yourself more enlightened on the subject instead of being lost in too much information that you don't know where to begin with....

The author gives some tips & resources, and you get to choose whatever is relevant for your situation.

Now I know what to look for, where to look for and where to invest; I will not go blind in this field anymore!

Gripping stories with good science

The jargon of diseases can be boring, tedious. There are a lot of acronyms and big words. Worse, we often don't know as much as we'd like -- and usually we aren't very certain of what we do know. Telling a good story given those constraints is hard. But Spillover repeatedly provides gripping stories that still impart a good understanding of what we know about zoonotic (animal-origin) diseases. Even better, the author ties disparate stories together to describe some general trend and possible causes for seemingly new infectious diseases. But I don't want to summarize the conclusions: I want you to go read it. You won't be bored and you'll learn a lot (most definitely even if you've read books like The Hot Zone or the Coming Plague).

Some other notes:
* The author has a less human-centric attitude and a lot of sympathy for the animals, like horses or apes, who sometimes are actually the first animal a disease spills over into only to later infect humans.
* He has a wry tone. When noting the euthanasia of a large number of monkeys (even ones likely not infected with a disease), he notes no humans were euthanized despite equal exposure.
* He provides full references. Some of those papers are quite readable by a non-expert such as this review ([...]) of the importance of bats as reservoirs for infectious diseases.
* The stories are often told from the perspective of the scientists trying to figure out what the heck is really going on. The author is also not afraid to explain when scientists just don't know -- and how they might figure it out more.
* The author went on several field collections where he might have been exposed to a disease being investigated.

If I had any criticisms I would have two:

* The author notes the problem of calling African hunted wild meat "bush meat" which has unsavory connotations to many Europeans and Americans despite Europeans and Americans also hunting wild animals for food. And then he still calls it that repeatedly for the rest of the book (hunted animals are a major source for new infections). I realize this makes it easier to read but it was a bit jarring.
* There is a long, imagined story in the chapters on the origin HIV that is, essentially, imagined entirely with details about a possible river fisherman who gets infected with HIV early on and brings it downstream to the (then) Belgian capitol of the Congo. Elsewhere in the book when the explanation for the origin of a disease required some imagination to fill in a plausible sequence of events, the imaginary stories were a lot less elaborate. I don't think the story detracts from the accuracy of the book: something like that had to have happened to explain the origin of HIV (specifically HIV-1). I was also perfectly entertained and learned a bit about the cultures in the region, but it stood out. It might annoy some so I note you can safely skip ahead when you hit it.

I call these two things out, but even so the book is still excellent. I have some interesting papers I want to read. I also feel I know more about how infectious diseases "work". Best of all, I am less fearful of them as well.

I have a science background but not in the biological sciences. Over the years I have followed much of the discussions about HIV/AIDS, SARS, and other outbreaks of infectious diseases in the popular press without being able to put it all together. This book provides that overall view and a status report on our efforts to deal with this ongoing threat. In a few spots there may be more technical information than many may want but it is presented in a way that allows one to move past it without losing the thread of the discussion. The book provides a description of the work done by the professionals on the front line and challenges they face. This is an important subject that we all should all be aware of. The book is well worth reading.

Excellent, Vital, Gripping Book

I can't recommend this book highly enough. Quammen's writing is vivid yet measured, detailed yet gripping, and he possesses true talent as a narrative non-fiction writer. His ability to explain complex scientific ideas and processes in layman's terms is fantastic, and made this book such a joy to read. Though pandemic disease is often written about in ways that are hysterical and melodramatic, SPILLOVER is not a fear-mongering book.

I also deeply appreciated Quammen's awareness of the animals involved, and his respect and empathy for them. It's subtle but ever-present in his choice of language describing them.

I hope this book is assigned in high schools-- it was so inspiring it made me wish I could do my undergraduate schooling over again and become a scientist.
