The Kite Runner follows the story of Amir, the privileged son of a wealthy businessman in Kabul, and Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant. As children in the relatively stable Afghanistan of the early 1970s, the boys are inseparable. They spend idyllic days running kites and telling stories of mystical places and powerful warriors until an unspeakable event changes the nature of their relationship forever, and eventually cements their bond in ways neither boy could have ever predicted. Hosseini's stunning debut novel starts as an eloquent Afghan version of the American immigrant experience in the late 20th century, but betrayal and redemption come to the forefront when the narrator, a writer, returns to his ravaged homeland to rescue the son of his childhood friend after the boy's parents are shot during the Taliban takeover in the mid '90s. Hassan and his father return to the village of their ancestors, and later Amir and his father flee to Los Angeles to avoid political persecution. Amir attends college, marries, and fulfills his dream of becoming a writer. For you thousand times over!!! Spoilers alert!

For you thousand times over!!!First time this sentence was said I was moved by the emotions it represented but when it was spoken second time, it just about made me cry. This is such a emotional story. I cried like a baby when Sohrab attempted suicide. I cried for Amir, for the man he was trying to be. The cried for Sohrab for all the injustice done to him.
The story started with Amir and Hassan's childhood. Amir is a coward whereas Hassan is a daredevil courageous boy. Although Hassan is Amir's only true friend but still Amir hates him at some level. Amir hates him for being braver and a better person than himselves. Amir knew he was a coward and he hated himselves for it too. As a child he loved only one person and that was his Baba, but this same Baba favoured Hassan to him because he was smarter than his own son.
Being a child Hassan is oblivious to working of Amir's mind. He loves Amir with such fierce intensity and loyalty that is so rare in this world. Even after worst kind of betrayals suffering from Amir, Hassan's loyalty didn't budge.
After his cowardice when Hassan needed him, Amir lived with this guilt for whole of his life. But then he got a chance for redemption. Redemption was not easy. Amir just about lost his life to pay for his sins. But in the end he did what he thought was right. As an adult he overcame his cowardice. He became the hero for Sohrab which he never thought he was capable of becoming ever.
There is twist towards the end that just about made me wail loudly with frustration. I am impressed with this writer's style of writing. How he connected many of their childhood instances towards the end connecting Amir with Sohrab. And how Amir becomes Hassan for Sohrab in the end!!!!

I watched the movie several years ago and it made me not want to read the book when a friend insisted I needed to read the book.
The same thing happened with Unbroken. I watched the movie first and had no interest in reading the book.
I think when a book is this great, they should not even attempt to make a movie because it will discourage people from reading it.
Or take more time to develop a better screenplay.
I know that this is a review of the book and not the movie but I feel that anyone who watches the movie will not be inspired to read The Kite Runner and miss out on this book that should be a must read.
It was not just the storytelling but the full range of complex emotions that we experience but have difficulty of expressing or even understanding ourselves. The guilt, the shame, the compassion commingled with love and hate is something the Hosseini captures through these characters in what will become a top 10 in anyone's reading list.
So if you watched the movie and were unimpressed, give the book a chance.

Brutal But a Great Read

My 16 year old daughter was assigned this book to read in school. I often read my high school aged children's literature assignments but rarely have I been so riveted by one. This story is not for the faint of heart. It's down right brutal at times and the language and subject matter are such that adults should think carefully before allowing their younger teens to read. But for older and more mature teens, there are important lessons to be learned. And for a born and bred American, it's refreshing to get a middle eastern perspective on the world that is honest and thoughtful. I don't know if it's accurate to say I enjoyed reading this book but I was certainly enriched by the experience.
