SHE COULDN'T CONCENTR ATE ON MAKING LOVE. No matter how tenderly or passionately or intimately Ken touched her, her mind was miles away. It was a little after five on Tuesday afternoon, the time they protected from meetings or dinner with friends or anything else that might interfere with their getting together, and usually Corinne relished the lovemaking with her fiancé. Today, though, she wanted to fast-forward to the pillow talk. She had so much to say.

Ken rolled off her with a sigh, and she saw him smile in the late-afternoon light as he rested his hand on her stomach. Did that mean something? Smiling with his hand on her belly? She hoped so but didn't dare ask him. Not yet. Ken loved the afterglow—the slow untangling of their limbs and the gradual return to reality—so she would have to be patient. She stroked her fingers through his thick, ash-blond hair as she waited for his breathing to settle down. Their baby was going to beautiful, no doubt about it.

"Mmm," Ken purred as he nuzzled her shoulder. Thin bands of light slipped into the room through the blinds, leaving luminous stripes on the sheet over his legs. "I love you, Cor."

"I love you, too." She wrapped her arm around him, trying to sense if he was alert enough to listen to her. "I did something amazing today," she began. "Two somethings, actually."

"What did you do?" He sounded interested, if not quite awake.

"First, I took the 540 to work."

His head darted up from his pillow. "You did?"

"Uh-huh."

"How was it?"

"Excellent." She'd had sweaty palms the whole time, but she'd managed. For the past few years, she'd taught fourth grade in a school eight miles from their house, and she'd never once had the courage to take the expressway to get there. She'd stuck to the tiny back roads, curling her way through residential neighborhoods, dodging cars as they backed out of driveways. "It took me about ten minutes to get to work," she said. "It usually takes me forty."

"I'm proud of you," he said. "I know how hard that must have been to do."

"And then I did another amazing thing," she said.

"I haven't forgotten. Two things, you said. What other amazing thing did you do?"

"I went on the field trip to the museum with my class, instead of staying at school like I'd planned."

"Now you're scaring me," he teased. "Are you on some new drug or something?"

"Am I remarkable or what?" she asked.

"You are definitely the most remarkable woman I know." He leaned over to kiss her."You're my brave,beautiful,red-haired girl."

She'd walked inside the museum as though she did it every day of the week, and she bet no one knew that her heart was pounding and her throat felt as though it was tightening around her windpipe. She guarded her phobias carefully. She could never let any of her students' parents—or worse, her fellow teachers—know.

"Maybe you're trying to do too much too fast," Ken said. She shook her head."I'm on a roll," she said."Tomorrow, I plan to step into the elevator at the doctor's office. Just step into it," she added hastily. "I'll take the stairs. But stepping into it will be a first step. So to speak. Then maybe next week, I'll take it up a floor." She shuddered at the thought of the elevator doors closing behind her, locking her in a cubicle not much bigger than a coffin.

"Pretty soon you won't need me anymore."

"I'm always going to need you." She wondered how serious he was with that statement. It was true that she needed Ken in ways most people didn't need a partner. He was the driver anytime they traveled more than a few miles from home. He was her rescuer when she'd have a panic attack in the supermarket, standing in the middle of an aisle with a full cart of groceries. He was the one holding on to her arm as he guided her through the mall or the Concert Hall or wherever they happened to be when her heart started pounding."I would just like to not need you that way. And I have to do this, Ken. I want that job."

She'd been offered a position that would start the following September, training teachers in Wake County to use a reading curriculum in which she'd become expert. That meant driving. A lot of driving. There would be six-lane highways to travel and bridges to cross and elevators she would have no choice but to ride. September was nearly a year away, and she was determined to have her fears mastered by then.

"Kenny."She pulled closer to him, nervous about the topic she was about to broach. "There's something else we really need to talk about."

His muscles tightened ever so slightly beneath her hands. "The pregnancy," he said.

She hated when he called it the pregnancy. She guessed she'd misread his smile earlier. "About the baby," she said. "Right."

He let out a sigh. "Cor, I've thought about it and I just don't think it's the right time. Especially with you starting a new job next year. How much stress do you need?"

"It would work out," she said. "The baby's due in late May. I'd take the end of the year off and have the summer to get used to being a mom and find day care and everything." She smoothed her hand over her stomach. Was it her imagination or was there already a slight slope to her belly? "We've been together so long," she continued. "It just doesn't make sense for me to have an abortion when I'm almost twenty-seven and you're thirty-eight and we can afford to have a child." She didn't say what else she was thinking: Of course, we'd have to get married. Finally. They'd been engaged and living together for four years, and if her pregnancy forced them to set a date, that was fine with her.

He gave her shoulders a squeeze, then sat up. "Let's talk about it later, okay?" he said.

"When?" she asked. "We can't keep putting this off."

"Later tonight," he promised.

She followed his gaze to the phone on the night table. The message light was blinking. He picked up the receiver and punched in their voice-mail code, then listened."Three messages," he said, hitting another button on the phone. The light in the room had grown dim, but she was still able to see him roll his eyes as he listened to the first message.

"Your mother," he said. "She says it's urgent."

"I'm sure." Corinne managed a laugh. Now that Dru had spilled the news of her pregnancy to their parents, she'd probably be getting urgent calls every day. Her mother had already e-mailed her to tell her that redheads were more prone to hemorrhaging after delivery. Thanks a heap, Mom. She hadn't bothered to reply. She hadn't spoken with her mother more than a few times in the past three years.

"There's one from Dru, too," Ken said."She says to call her the minute you get the message."

That was more worrisome. An urgent message from her mother was easy to ignore. From her sister, less so."I hope there's not anything wrong," she said, sitting up.

"They would have called you on your cell if it was so important," he said, still holding the phone to his ear.

"True." She got out of bed and pulled on her short green robe, then picked up her phone from the dresser and turned it on."Except, I didn't have my cell on today because of the field trip, so—"

"What the—" Ken frowned as he listened to another message.

"What the hell are you talking about?" He shouted into the phone. Glancing at his watch, he walked across the room to turn on the television.

"What's going on?" Corinne watched him click through the channels until he reached WIGH, the Raleigh station for which he was a reporter. "That was a message from Darren," he said, as he punched another phone number into the receiver."He's kicking me off the Gleason story."

"What?" She was incredulous. "Why?"

"He said it was for obvious reasons, like I should know what the hell he's talking about." He looked at his watch again and she knew he was waiting for the six-o'clock news. "Come on, come on," he said to the television or the phone—or maybe both."Give me Darren!" he yelled into the receiver. "Well, where is he?" He hung up and started dialing again.

"They can't pull you off that story," she said."That would be so unfair after all the work you've done on it." The Gleason story was his baby. He'd even attracted national attention for it. People were talking about him being a candidate for the Rosedale Award.

"Darren said,'Did you know about this?' like I've been keeping something from him." Ken ran his fingers through his hair. "Oh, don't give me your damn voice mail," he said into the phone.

"Dammit." She felt his impatience as he waited to leave a message.

"What the hell do you mean, I'm off the Gleason story?" he shouted. "Call me!"

He tossed the receiver onto the bed, then pounded the top of the television with his fist as though he could make the news come on sooner through force. "I don't believe this," he said. "When I left the courthouse today, the jury hadn't sentenced him yet and they were supposed to reconvene tomorrow. Maybe I heard it wrong. Maybe I missed the sentencing. Damn!"

Corinne looked down at the cell phone in her hand as she cycled through the list of callers."I have five messages, all from my parents' house," she said. Something was wrong. "I'd better call—"

"Shh," Ken said, turning up the volume as the brassy theme music introduced the news, and anchorman Paul Provost appeared on the screen.

"Good evening, Triangle," Paul said, referring to the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area. "Just hours before Timothy Gleason was to be sentenced for the 1977 murder of Genevieve Russell and her unborn child, a shocking revelation shed doubt on his guilt."

"What?" Ken stared at the TV.

Footage of a small arts-and-crafts-style bungalow filled the screen. The roof looked wet from a recent rain, and the trees were lush, the leaves just starting to turn.

"Is that…?" Corinne pressed her hand to her mouth. She knew exactly how the air smelled in the small front yard of the house. It would be thick and sweet with the damp arrival of autumn.

"Oh, my God."

Through the front door, a middle-aged woman limped onto the porch. She looked small and tired. And she looked scared.

"What the hell is going on?" Ken...

Heartbreaking and Courageous Read
By Lizzie McComas
The book started out slow for me. And then it escalated VERY rapidly. It was like a book on steroids.

***SPOILERS***

I found it difficult to believe that a girl would say yes to kidnapping someone for a man she loves (that she only recently had gotten to "know"). I suppose stranger things have happened, though. After the actual kidnapping and when "real life" begins with the baby, that's when the book REALLY captured my attention.

I don't exactly know what it is about the book that is so spellbounding. There's fear, deceit, love, "strangulation", severe phobias, courage, and finally...truth. This book is heartbreaking to me. The beginning made me so angry, but the middle to the end broke my heart completely. It's amazing how you can feel compassion and a sort of understanding for a criminal.

I really recommend this book. I read it all night long because I couldn't put it down. See what it does for you. Like it, love it, or hate it, I think this is the type of book that makes you really think and it stays with you.

LOVABLE BUT FLAWED CHARACTERS....
By Laurel-Rain Snow
CeeCee Wilkes was a vulnerable, sixteen-year-old girl who had lived in foster homes after the death of her mother when she was twelve.

The letters she carried with her, the ones her mother had written to serve as a guide to her as she matured, would be her only touchstone. But nothing in her mother's letters or the life she'd lived could have prepared her for the charming, manipulative Tim Gleason.

The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes begins with a prologue in the present, with a young woman named Corinne, who watches as the woman she knew as her mother confesses a horrendous secret in front of TV cameras.

We then flash back to 1977, and to an event that changed CeeCee's life forever.

In alternating narratives told by Corinne, by CeeCee, and then Eve Elliott, the persona she took on while in hiding, we learn about the fear and vulnerability the young girl faced one terrible night in a remote cabin, and how she spent the next period of her life in hiding. And tried over the years to be the best mother she could be to the baby she "stole" in order to protect her.

What really happened in that remote cabin? What would finally bring the truth out? What price would CeeCee (Eve) have to pay for telling her story? And how would Corinne bury the bitterness and anger she feels in order to reach out to the woman she knew as her mother?

This was a story that spotlighted many issues of morality and choice, and which allows the reader to root for CeeCee despite her wrong choices. I could not stop reading or caring about the characters, flawed though they were. I loved this story and would recommend it for all who enjoy family stories and for those who are fans of Chamberlain. 5.0 stars.

Interesting read
By S. A.
This is an OK book. Reads more like an action movie. It is not a literary sensation.
The book tells the story of a 16-year old Cee Cee Wilkes that gets caught up in unfortunate events and her life changes forever. Later in her life she makes decisions that affect not only her life, but lives of people very close to her. The reader goes through an emotional roller coaster and a love-hate relationship with Cee Cee and several characters in the book. The author introduces concepts and characters that seem to be good in concept but end up in bead actions and it is not always easy to understand why. It is a captivating story ( as someone else suggested , good airplane read) but not a 5 star, because of the following reasons;
-I bought the Kindle version and I have not seen the hard copy, so this might be just the kindle version. But there were a lot of typos that I found odd. I hoped someone would have edited the e-version!
-As clever as the plot is, there are some unanswered questions and confusing parts. Why does Bets make that last decision (I am not telling what, not to spoil the book). That did not make sense at all. How did Corinne develop those phobias? I did not get what the author meant by "over-protection". To me, Cee Cee or Eva did what every mother would have done. Seemed like she was the same loving and caring mother to Dru that she was to Cory. There is perhaps just one reference by the husband to suggest otherwise. The author could have done a better job in explaining Cory's character to the reader. Perhaps a few more pages could have written on Cory's childhood and her relationship with Eva. There are also other questions, like How come the police never became suspicious of Cee Cee who suddenly left the town? -What happened to all those who helped her and she named them all? -How did all those working for SCAPE , who was supposedly a good cause, agree to be tangled in a mess that includes death of another person? And neither them , nor cee cee never question that? and most important of all, it did not make sense at all to put her in charge of what happened in the Cabin. For people who had such a huge plot, it was stupid to put a 16-year old in charge and let her control the outcome of what they had plotted so carefully!

All in all this is an interesting book with an engaging plot. Once you start, it will be hard to put it down, but you have to be prepared to ignore some flaws.

Wonderful and reasonably comprehensive resource, with illustrations and relatable meanings. Short and to the point, not like some symbol dictionaries, which are thoroughly informative, but make it difficult to get to the essence of possible meaning.

Great little reference guide for the graphic designer
By A Customer
This book should be on the reference shelf of anyone designing or evaluating logos. It is compact and packed with information on shapes, images and symbols from the perpectives of cultures around the world - from prehistory forward. It is illustrated and cross-referenced. Grab it several time throughout the design process to make sure you are on target with the symbolism inherent in the shapes and images you are using in your designs. Great value.

How often does one say "awesome!" about a textbook?
By Gideon Markman
I'm a professor of strategy, and have been teaching Strategic Management for undergraduates, MBAs, and executives (in and outsides the U.S.) for over 10 years, and never found a text that satisfied my desire to present top-notch material in a synthesized fashion. But I now have found this book--Frank Rothaermel's new Strategic Management text is really a brand-new text that makes a quantum leap forward in presenting cutting edge theory and examples leveraging the unique intersection of theory/concepts, empirical research, and practical application. Strategic management is about superior positioning for competitive advantage, and no other book on the market except Frank's has been able to position itself in this sweet spot. Not to mention the cutting edge examples that today's students can relate to (Facebook, Tesla Motors, Apple, BYD, Tata Group, and so on). Another great differentiator is that Frank wrote not only 12 MiniCases (great to get discussion started) but also 15 full-length cases that are perfectly integrated with the text to teach concepts and frameworks presented therein. The full-length cases also come with financial data already prepared in spreadsheets for ratio analysis, another first in the strategy textbook industry. Clearly, Frank's book is unique on many dimensions and has carved out a valuable, rare, and hard if not impossible to imitate strategic position in the textbook market combined with fully integrated and innovative example and exercises. It is not just a textbook but a new generation strategy teaching product that will make even novices look like rock stars. And students just "love" the content--how often do you find that emotional reaction about college textbooks? What Michael Porter has done for the academic work in strategy, Frank is now doing for strategy textbooks: setting a new standard while providing a superior paradigm to teach strategy. Truly awesome!

It makes you a BETTER teacher!
By Anne W. Fuller
I'm a tenure track professor of strategy with many prior years of industry work experience and I have reviewed many textbooks trying to find a good match for my students at the undergraduate, masters and executive levels. Until this book, I have not been successful in this search.

I knew that I liked Frank Rothaermel's new textbook "Strategic Management" when I had a chance to review an early version of it myself. It has great examples and very crisp yet rigorous strategic concepts throughout the book. The text also has an entire chapter on innovation which I believe is quite important for our students to consider as they graduate and get into today's workforce. The book has a wonderful and unique chapter on three different lenses of viewing or measuring competitive advantage. I personally like the pithy chapter openers which not only relate to the material in each chapter but also have a `case closing thoughts' for each chapter to bring the ideas home for the students. The `strategy highlights' are another of my favorite features. They are excellent ice breakers for class discussions. Students love the examples of Threadless, Starbucks, Nintendo and Pixar and Frank has done a great job of tying the exemplar firm's to the tool and topics in each chapter.

What surprised me however was the degree that my students related to Dr. Rothaermel's textbook. Until using this text I have rarely if ever seen comments like this in the "what did you like about the course?" student evaluations... " The textbook was easy to read and had great current examples that made it easier to understand.", "Not only was the text extremely useful, but it applied to everything we did." , "the textbook was NOT boring, it included up-to-date information about companies that was very interesting". "The textbook actually enhanced the learning experience and helped emphasize the points learned in class with real live companies and how they used the tools to gain a competitive advantage." "It was one of the most interesting textbooks I've had in my college courses". Yes these are actual quotes from my student course evaluations.

Further, my actual course evaluation scores are UP when using this textbook. I've taught 16 sections of this course thus far and my average student evaluation is about 4.6 out of 5.0. However fall 2011 I had the chance to beta test Dr. Rothaermel's book and my student evaluation scores soared up to 4.91! Same course, same professor, different textbook.... You be the judge!

A rare find - a strategy book that works well in the classroom and in the field!
By RLP
Strategic Management by Frank Rothaermel is a rare find - a great strategy book for the classroom, and an equally useful book for the manager/practitioner in the field. I spent over 20 years in the field working in corporations, small to medium sized business, and starting and running my own businesses. Rothaermel's book on strategy finally replaced my worn out copies of Michael Porter's books on strategy as my 'go-to books' that I used as my strategy guides at GE and AT&T in the field.

After completing my PhD in strategy I have used many textbooks at the undergraduate and graduate level. When the McGraw-Hill team shared with me that 'yet another' strategy book was coming out I admit I was skeptical. When I heard Frank Rothaermel was involved I agreed to review it and give it a try. I have had great success using the book the last two semesters in an undergraduate class of over 400 students, and with over 100 graduate students.

There are a number of good strategy books on the market - what gives this book a competitive advantage? In my opinion, and based on my experience using the book, there are several points: 1) It is clearly written, the concepts are logically connected together, and the mini-cases are well chosen for each chapter to illustrate key points. My students actually enjoyed reading the book! 2) Rothaermel does an excellent job integrating Porter's five forces/industry structure framework and the resource based view concepts from Barney - few books give such a balanced treatment of the two views that are fundamental to understanding strategy. 3) Frank includes a quantitative view of how to determine a firm's competitive advantage (see chapter 5 - if you are a follower of M. Porter, you know he is an economist and he insists that measures of competitive advantage must be quantified - Rothaermel does this nicely). All of these points apply to both the Concepts, and the Concepts and Cases versions.

If you need cases to go with the concepts, the Concepts and Cases brings 30 some full length cases of a wide variety to the reader - the cases are up-to-date and there are several for each chapter. I don't use more than one or two of the cases in the undergraduate course but I have them all to draw from (fortunately McGraw-Hill has a very easy way to customize a book and include just what you need). However, for a graduate course I use six to eight cases. There's even a nice guide that helps you select the cases that are a good fit for the topics. Again, I've found I can save my students some money using the custom create feature, and with 30 cases it will be a long time before I worry that the same case has been repeated. Also, for many cases, there are Excel spreadsheets available direct from the case data with firm data so you can drive the quantitative points of the analysis.

In summary, if you are looking for a very versatile and up-to-date book with a host of support materials, I strongly suggest you consider Rothaermel's Strategic Management by McGraw-Hill - this is a strategy book that has a clear competitive advantage over its rivals.

An Impressive, Comprehensive Collection of Jack London's Works
By Tom Croft
Delphi Classics is correct: As of this writing, all four of the reviews linked to this ebook on Amazon.com are for the wrong product--not Delphi's wonderful Complete Works of Jack London. Though I don't know enough about Jack London's writings to say whether this is EVERYTHING the man ever wrote, I can vouch for the comprehensive nature of this nicely presented and formatted works collection. All 197 short stories are here and, as far as I know, all of the novels, plays, etc. It's a huge collection but well organized and easily navigated. I can't imagine finding a better Jack London collection for the Kindle anywhere. Delphi has similar collections for many other classic authors whose works are now in the public domain. They are a fairly new company, but it's clear to me they want to become the leading provider of public-domain classics for the Kindle (at least for readers who like these comprehensive complete-works collections). At $2.99 each, they're an incredible value.

I should also mention that Delphi has excellent customer service, and they take quality control seriously. For example, there are some minor formatting issues in the first novel of this collection (The Cruise of the Dazzler). Many words containing apostrophes contain an extra space. I contacted Delphi about this, and they sent me a corrected file directly by e-mail within two or three days. I was very impressed. I highly recommend this and other Delphi Classics works collections.

Can't go wrong
By stevejer
Delphi Classics is fast becoming my go-to publisher for all books in public domain. The best writers, conviently compiled, and attractively packaged along with letters, unpublished works and illustrations. If the body of work is not complete (i.e., not in public domain) the publisher is upfront about it. The price cannot be beat and the works are easily navigable. The only quibble I have about the London compilation is that the short stories are inexplicably difficult to navigate so I could not verify that a particular favorite was included before purchase. London is the greatest American writer since Twain (piss on you, Hemingway!), and you cannot go wrong here.

Complete Works of Jack London
By Tomwat
I have read several of Jack London's novels over the years. I thoroughly enjoyed all of these. When I received the complete works I was somewhat daunted to realise that there were so many books. When did Jack have time to go on all of those adventures whilst he was writing so many novels.

What I have learnt, is that Jack London must have had a complex mind and a dominating personality. Whilst I don't agree with some of his political and apparently racist views (by today's standards), I am going to enjoy reading the rest of his novels and stories.

The Oxford Handbook of Greek and Roman Art and Architecture (Oxford Handbooks)From Oxford University Press

The study of Greek and Roman Art and Architecture has a long history that goes back to the second half of the 18th century and has provided an essential contribution towards the creation and the definition of the wider disciplines of Art History and Architectural History. This venerable tradition and record are in part responsible for the diffused tendency to avoid general discussions addressing the larger theoretical implications, methodologies, and directions of research in the discipline. This attitude is in sharp contrast not only with the wider field of Art History, but also with disciplines that are traditionally associated with the study of Greek and Roman Art and Architecture, like Classics and Classical Archaeology. In recent years, the field has been characterized by an ever-increasing range of approaches, under the influence of various disciplines such as Sociology, Semiotics, Gender Theory, Anthropology, Reception Theory, and Hermeneutics. In light of these recent developments, this Handbook seeks to explore key aspects of Greek and Roman Art and Architecture, and to assess the current state of the discipline.

The Handbook includes thirty essays, in addition to the introduction, by an international team of leading senior scholars, who have played a critical role in shaping the field, and by younger scholars, who will express the perspectives of a newer generation. After a framing introduction written by the editor, which compares ancient and modern notions of art and architecture, the Handbook is divided into five sections: Pictures from the Inside, Greek and Roman Art and Architecture in the Making, Ancient Contexts, Post-Antique Contexts, and Approaches. Together, the essays in the volume make for an innovative and important book, one that is certain to find a wide readership.

NOT JUST A "HANDBOOK"
By Critical Mass
For anyone professionally or avocationally interested in the subject of Greek and Roman art, this book is a must for you. Divided into V Parts and containing multiple authorship, this book deals with what appears to be every possible aspect of Greek and Roman art. From theoretical to patronage to content and, finally, approaches, THE OXFORD HANDBOOK OF GREEK AND ROMAN ART AND ARCHITECTURE is really encyclopedic in nature (even though it claims not to be) with some sections as long as 35 pages containing an extensive number of references at the end of each section. Whatever your definition, the depth and range of subject matter is most rewarding. Many may find the text to be a bit dense
but certainly not superficial. Patience in reading it will prove to be extremely worthwhile. It need not be read in the order presented depending upon one's own interest. Feel free to skip around and re-read particular sections if necessary. This is not a novel.

The word "classic" is often overused, and seldom applied accurately.
By Peter Carrier
The term will do in this case, however. "Swords Against Death" is a classic of the genre. Immensely entertaining, enjoyable, pithy, droll and just plain fun could be used every bit as interchangeably as 'classic' and still hit the mark.

With passages such as "After all, girls had a way of blotting out all lesser, but not thereby despicable, delights. Girls were for dessert.", how could one see this collection of stories as anything other than a masterpiece of the highest order? Perhaps if one were no fan of fantasy, but only in that rare instance. Otherwise, a careful reader would still take great delight in Leiber's phrasing, rhythm, word selection, vocabulary, structure and use of language in general.

To think that so many of Leiber's works remain ahead of me... I can hardly contain my eagerness.

Wonderful Tales; Kindle edition has a formatting issue
By Carol A. Thompson
Fritz Leiber (hereinafter referred to as The Master) invented Sword & Sorcery. Read him. (Not just the Swords series, everything!)

The fighting is believable. Laughs and perils abound. They fit best into the weird horror category.

The Master's work influenced many others: His city Lankhmar - which was inspried by Los Angeles - inspired Terry Pratchett's Ankh-Morpork - which was also inspired by London. Michael Chabon's "Gentlemen of the Road" is a direct steal.

The KIndle edition has a problem with font size. I normally use a mid-level font size when I read on my Kindles. When I opened this book, the font was too teeny to read! I had to use almost the biggest font to be able to read it!

and I couldn't be happier that I did
By Pistoleer
I recently rediscovered the Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser series, and I couldn't be happier that I did. Superbly written, totally enjoyable fantasy romps with two unforgettable characters. Strongly recommended. Some of the content is SLIGHTLY "racy" - about like a PG-13 movie nowadays.

The Situation Is Hopeless But Not Serious (The Pursuit of Unhappiness), by Paul Watzlawick

Calling upon metaphors, vignettes, jokes, innuendos, and certain other "right-hemispheric" language games, Paul Watzlawick shows how we can (and do) make everyday life miserable.

Do you see the past through a rosy filter that makes it seem like Paradise Lost? Are you convinced that traffic lights always turn red for you? Do you have to win (so as not to lose)? After extricating yourself from a bad relationship, do you find another partner just like the previous one? If so, congratulations! You have the makings of an unhappiness expert. With the techniques in this book, you can raise yourself to the genius level. A word of warning, however. Along the way you may begin to ask yourself, "How did I manage to turn myself into my own worst enemy?" Fortunately, this tongue-in-cheek (but serious) volume takes a look at that question too.

Special attention is given to such topics as "Four Games with the Past," "Self-fulfilling Prophecies," and "Why Would Anybody Love Me?" Those who believe that the search for happiness will eventually lead to happiness will find much to ponder in the section "Beware of Arriving."

All readers will be both amused and startled to find themselves in these pages, but there is a special delight and enlightenment for therapists and counselors. Although the author does not officially admit it, the book is one complex "symptom prescription," a therapeutic double bind as described and practiced by him and his colleagues.

A really amusing and tale-telling reading
By Bartolomucci Fabrizio
The author extracts from his extensive practice and writing in the field of communication theory an amusing list of "technics" people use to make their own lives miserable. They span from the avoidance of things that could solve one's own problems to the dual tendency to insist focusing on what cannot be reached; to projecting one's prejudices on others like when one wants to ask something fearing it will not be given and thus putting in act behaviours that forster just that reaction.

All in all the feeling that one gets from the book is that we do not need terrorism, wars, discriminations, torture, presidents of the United States or Osamas... all that is needed to make ourselves unhappy is already inside ourselves - thus, and here comes the positive message, it is there that it may, and must, be cured.

Hilarious
By A Customer
Brilliant. When I wasn't laughing out loud, I was pierced by his trenchant obervations. Shows us how we choose unhappiness without even thinking about it. He is no Pangloss, the world is a tough place, but Watzlawick shows us how we make it worse than it has to be for ourselves. Highly, highly recommended for anyone with a sense of humor who wants to know more about him/herself.

LAUGHING YOURSELF OUT OF UNHAPPINESS
By Luciano Lupini
A review by the marqueeofburano: A wonderful, witty, exposé of our endeavors to live a more miserable life by Watzlawick, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral science at Stanford University. The treatment of the subject will surely make you laugh at yourself and thus, perhaps, contribute to make you a better person.
W. deals with the fundamental, painful, necessity of the human being to be unhappy (in order to be quiet). And in fact, he contends that the best chapters of universal literature dwell with disaster, tragedy, guilt, madness, etc.
Dante's Inferno-W. writes- is very superior to his Paradise; same case as Milton's Paradise Lost compared with his Paradise Regained; Faust I's greatness is proportionally inverse to the tediousness of Faust II. So the author embarks hilariously in a methodic introduction to the best and more verifiable mechanisms to achieve unhappiness. Samples:
Always be truthful to yourself. A principle, from Polonius in Hamlet,of the outmost necessity for us ( its application is what gets the guy killed by Hamlet like a rat). So then, we must resist any temptation to yield to any other criteria or opinion, apart from ours. Never compromise or accept someone else's advice. The author then addresses the issue of the old saying: "time cures all wounds"..... According to W. four sound mechanisms exist if you want to avoid time's healing effects and transform the past into a present source of suffering. In the exaltation of the past we find those that only remember the good things about their youth and not the years of insecurity and anxiety. In so doing, they have a consistent reserve of sadness about their miserable present...... Also, this fidelity to the past, impairs our ability to enjoy the present and fully dedicate our efforts to the endeavors of the moment. Another mechanism is to consistently dwell with the guilt complex that past errors create, finding excuses or scapegoats (our parents, God, chromosomes, teachers etc.) while doing nothing to avoid committing the same mistakes again.
The author drives his point with practical examples. For instance the story of the hammer. A man wants to hang a painting. He has the nail, but not the hammer. Therefore it occurs to him to go over to the neighbor and ask him to lend him his hammer. But at this point, doubt sets in. What if he doesn't want to lend me the hammer? Yesterday he barely spoke to me. Maybe he was in a hurry. Or, perhaps, he holds something against me. But why? I didn't do anything to him. If he would ask me to lend him something, I would, at once. How can he refuse to lend me his hammer? People like him make other people's life miserable. Worst, he thinks that I need him because he has a hammer. This is got to stop ! And suddenly the guy runs to the neighbor's door, rings, and before letting him say anything, he screams: "You can keep your hammer, you b......"
Watzlawick not only discussess techniques to create false problems, but also the ones that make it actually possible to avoid solving problems and conver them into eternal torments. Here we get the example of the man that claps his hands every ten seconds. Asked why he does that, he answers: "to drive away the elephants..." -"But why, there are no elephants here"- The guy says: "Precisely".
This is a very funny book. It deals, with a fresh and delightful approach, with many of our karmas and mind bothering mosquitoes.......
