A good easy read with a lot of basic information on google

As an experienced hardware focused engineer I have not followed any of the buzz about google. I have used google for many many years and find the tool useful for doing engineering research and solving technical issues. So reading this book helped me understand much more than I knew about how google is managed and guided.

Undoubtedly the best guidebook for trekking and cycling in the Huaraz area!

There are a few guidebooks available on trekking in the Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash, but none are nearly as good as this one. The reason for this is simple, this guidebook has been written by people who actually did all the treks (and cycle routes) themselves, and who have clearly spent a long time in the area, which is obvious as their understandings of the local culture, issues and needs is very evident and well explained. This is a must for anyone planning a trip to the region, whether it be for trekking or cycling, route descriptions are clear and accurate, maps are easily readable and so detailed, and there is also plenty of extra information on good places to stay, restaurants, agencies, how to get to places, etc. It is obvious that the authors have a deep passion, love and respect for the Andes, its nature and people alike, and that is the reason why this guidebook is of the highest quality. So don't bother with Bradt (worryingly inaccurate), Lonely Planet or other, this is undoubtedly the best guidebook on this most wonderful part of Peru.

Great guidebook to a beautiful region

This is an excellent current resource for anyone wishing to hike or bike in the area. Some of the guidebooks that others refer to are out of date or out of print so it's nice to find a guidebook that has good background information, detailed hand-drawn maps and thorough descriptions of the trails. I particularly appreciated the information about the region that included some of the history of the area and information about the flora and fauna. There is also good information about the various towns and villages that hikers might encounter. I wish I had had it when we did the Santa Cruz Trail but hopefully we'll be back soon to check out some more beautiful hikes.

Without a doubt one of the best guide books for the Cordilleras Blanca and Huayhuash. What struck me most when reading it was both the familiarity with the locations described - the authors clearly spent a good amount of time in these mountain - as well as the depth of description, down to a great level of detail. The maps are really helpful and for cyclists there are some super useful nuggets of information for making riding here much smoother, as well as loads of routes to choose from. About the Author
John Horsman graduated with honors from Cambridge University in 1958, with a master's degree in mechanical sciences (engineering). After serving in the Royal Air Force, Horsman apprenticed with David Brown, and proceeded to Aston Martin as a project engineer. He became an assistant to the managing director, John Wyer, in 1961. In 1964 Hormsan followed Wyer to Ford Advanced Vehicles Ltd., where he was responsible for the GT40 program. J.W. Automotive Engineering was created after the Ford program ended, and Horsman became director of the company and chief engineer. He went on to manage the Gulf Racing Research Comapny, which was an outgrowth of JWAE, and later moved to America to run the Mirage program for Grand Touring Cars in Phoenix, Arizona. He now lives in Tucson, Arizona, with his wife, Janet.

One of the greatest books I've ever read on racing!

I adored each page and praised the author in each and every chapter of this book for the comprehensive technical detailing he gave on the cars, the drivers, and all the important aspects of the racetracks in hand, combined with a both very pleasant and thrilling read on the details of the race itself.
Although my review is not by any means worth of this book, I shall recommend it to any car-nut, particularly to 60s-70s sports car race fans or, for any fans of the cars (GT40, 917, Mirage...) and drivers (Ickx, Bell, Redman, Rodriguez,...) that have become legends, mostly thanks to this great era of racing.
This is, so far, my favourite book about these mad but magnificent years of motorsport, when cars where faster than the Grand Prix cars and also the drivers from Formula 1 were present in many of this races, giving the competition a very high level.
It's also very interesting to learn how an engineer (the author himself) learns and grows from being a newbie in racing, starting in Aston Martin in the 50s, to start a whole new team with the charismatic John Wyer, race and develop some of the most iconic Sports Cars ever to run in Le Mans and anywhere (the GT40 and 917K), to finally becoming a team boss for one of the most successful teams in sports car racing.
All of this condensed in a book of which you can never have enough. I'll be looking forward to re-read it soon, a rarity in me, by the way.

Another Gem of a Book about Sports Car Racing's Golden Era

This book is definitely a 5-star addition to the growing collection of books about sports car racing in the late 60's and early 70's. I "grew up" in this era and didn't realize until much later what an amazing time it was for racing. I've got the 917 books by Morgan and by Hinsdale. I have the original "Excellence was Expected" by Ludvigsen, and I recently bought Vic Elford's excellent autobiography and Jo Siffert's biography. Heck, I even bought Keyser's "A French Kiss with Death" about the making of the movie "LeMans." "Racing in the Rain" ranks among the very best. It is loaded with 400 pages of behind the scene stories and is packed with tremendous photogaphy, including two previously unpublished ones of the famous "Horsman tail" for the 917 and a fascinating story of how it came to be in that pre-computer diagnostic era. Aerodynamic designs through brains and clever observation instead of computer analysis. Uttlerly fascinating and great reading. If you're a true road racing fan, you must add this book to your collection!

An Outstanding Book on Motorsports

This is probably one of the best books ever published on motorsports of this era. John Horsman has included great technical details on the Aston- Martins, Ford GT-40s, Porsche 917s, and GTC Mirages in this book that cannot be found elsewhere. Also interesting are the inside explanations of why certain races were won or lost and the ever- changing rules of the sanctioning bodies. Personal anecdotes of drivers, team members, and of racecar development work make interesting reading.

Altogether a valuable reference work and a well- told story of what professional racing was like. Good work, John! by Neil Albaugh

Smith reads Du Bois’s photographs in relation to other turn-of-the-century images such as scientific typologies, criminal mugshots, racist caricatures, and lynching photographs. By juxtaposing these images with reproductions from Du Bois’s exhibition archive, Smith shows how Du Bois deliberately challenged racist representations of African Americans. Emphasizing the importance of comparing multiple visual archives, Photography on the Color Line reinvigorates understandings of the stakes of representation and the fundamental connections between race and visual culture in the United States.

Darrel Campbell grew up so dirt-poor in a hardscrabble mining town in eastern Kentucky that he was thirteen years old before he used an indoor toilet for the first time. Like most boys his age, Campbell’s days consisted of chores to keep the family clothed and fed. But when the work day ended, he and his friends ran wild in the Appalachian foothills, shooting squirrels and birds, pulling pranks, and causing as much mischief as possible.

Despite the poverty and violence so prevalent in the region, Campbell recalls the hardships of his childhood without self-pity and with plenty of humor. What he and his friends lacked in expensive toys or fancy clothes, they made up for with imagination and grit—traits that would eventually carry Campbell through high school and college—and out of poverty.

A funny, moving glimpse into Appalachia in the 1940s and 50s, A Hillbilly Grows Up tells not only the story of one young boy and his family, but describes the social fabric that held small towns together across a region riddled with deprivation and scarcity. Readers will shake their heads and wonder how Campbell survived his childhood—but will be awfully glad he did.

About the Author

Darrel Campbell studied at Berea College in Kentucky for two years before graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a BS in chemistry and attending the Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania. Campbell retains US patents, published many articles in trade publications, and was profiled in an issue of Chemical Week. During his career, Campbell held positions in three multibillion-dollar international companies. He has traveled globally, even living in South America for two years. He currently lives in Portland, Oregon, with his wife of over fifty years.

Cindy Campbell Krause attended Northwestern University and graduated with a degree in psychology. She went on to earn a graduate degree in marketing from Loyola University of Chicago and work in purchasing around Chicago and Milwaukee. Married for over twenty years, she has two kids and lives near Detroit, Michigan. She plans to move to the Cleveland, Ohio, area soon.

Alphas-who are predominantly male-may be aggressive achievers who get things done, but their potential for explosive anger and ruthless competitiveness can be bad for business. Alpha male truly dives into the behavioral aspects of the alpha male. Should you find yourself needing or wanting to improve your bedside manner with others, then by all means read this book. This book gives a round view of the various types of alpha males and their personality pros and cons.

An Insightful Book For Alphas and Those Who Work With Them!

What I appreciate about this well written book is that it doesn't just give "quick fixes" for alphas. Instead, Kate and Eddie invite us all to explore the deeper issues going on underneath the surface in order to create lasting changes. As an Alpha, I learned more about my own challenges and as a coach to Alphas, gleaned much wisdom from the examples Kate and Eddie shared from their vast experience.
